1 Using Visualizations to Make a Claim
3/6/17

2 Agenda Finish assessing group posts from last class
Visualizations as argument discussion Visualization partner activity Thinking about significance activity homework

3 What should Visualizations Do?
Help the reader think about the important message(s) from the data, rather than about methodology Avoid distorting the data Make large data sets coherent Emphasize the important numbers Encourage the reader to compare different pieces of data

4 Visualizations always make an argument

5 What argument does your visualization make?
With a partner in your group show them the visualizations you made. Reader: Tell the author what argument you see the visualization making. Author: Respond the reader. Did the reader understand the argument you were hoping to make with the visualization? Next discuss, ways to improve the visualization to highlight what you really want to argue.

6 Troubleshooting Tableau
Now that you have some ideas about how to refine your visualization, try making them happen by revising or creating new worksheets on tableau. Pull out your post-it notes. Use your partner and other groupmates as support.

7 Exploring Data What we have just done is what scholars in Digital Humanities call “exploring data” Identifying patterns, associations, trends Now you must decide what argument you want to make.

8 What is the significance of The data in your visualization for understanding the LHC?
Your answer will be that the visualization demonstrates______about the LHC. Once you understand the significance, you will need to think about what additional research of secondary sources you will need to complete to support an argument about this significance. List the subjects you will need to further research the writing or production process of the life histories. - You might consider jumping into the argument between Rapport and Hirsch/Terrill 2) a specific social issue at the time, such as education, mills, farming, etc. and how it would intersect with demographics information such as race, gender, location For each of your visualizations, answer these questions and post to our website with tag ‘significance of data viz’

9 Homework Finish significance activity, and make sure to post
