2 TROY & the TROJAN WAR -Troy was a city both factual & legendary located on Asia Minor, now modern day Turkey - It is best known for the Trojan War, as depicted in Homer’s epic poem the Iliad - The Iliad relates a part of the last year of the siege of Troy, while the Odyssey describes the journey home of Odysseus, one of the Greek leaders - the Trojan War was waged against the city of Troy by the Greeks after Paris of Troy took Helen from her husband Menelaus, the king of Sparta

3 TROY & the TROJAN WAR -Key Figures of the Trojan War- The Greeks - Agamemnon: was the leader of the Greek forces. He was the brother-in-law of Helen of Troy. Brother of Menelaus. - Clytemnestra: wife of Agamemnon ruled while he was away, when he returned, she killed him. - Achilles: the leading hero of the Greeks in the Trojan War. - Menelaus: the king of Sparta. Helen, the wife of Menelaus was stolen by a prince of Troy while a guest in the palace of Menelaus - Odysseus : Greek Leader, the Odyssey focussed on his return to Ithaca from the war. -Patroclus: friend of Achilles who put on his armour and led the Myrmidons into battle, while Achilles was sulking on the sidelines. He was killed by Hector.

- Helen of Troy: wife of Menelaus. Helen's beauty was so overwhelming that Paris abducted her and the Trojan War was fought to bring her home. - Priam: the king of Troy. Hecuba was the wife of Priam. Sons: Hector & Paris - Hector: Trojan prince and the leading hero of the Trojans. Killed by Achilles - Paris: Trojan prince who falls in love with Helen and takes her back to Troy. Kills Achilles.

7 The Iliad Main Character - Achilles
- Time- Bronze Age; The Iliad begins nine years after the start of the Trojan War - Setting- Troy (a city in what is now northwest Turkey) Main Character - Achilles Major conflict · Agamemnon’s demand for Achilles’ war prize, the maiden Briseis, wounds Achilles’ pride; Achilles’ consequent refusal to fight causes the Greeks to suffer greatly in their battle against the Trojans. Rising action- Hector’s assault on the Greek ships; the return of Patroclus to combat; the death of Patroclus Climax - Achilles’ return to combat turns the tide against the Trojans once and for all and ensures the fated fall of Troy to which the poet has alluded throughout the poem.

8 The Iliad - Falling action - The retreat of the Trojan army; Achilles’ revenge on Hector; the Achaeans’ desecration of Hector’s corpse

9 The Odyssey Main Character - Odysseus
- Time- Bronze Age the Odyssey begins where the Iliad ends and covers the ten years after the fall of Troy. - Setting- Odysseus’s wanderings cover the Aegean and surrounding seas and eventually end in Ithaca, in northwestern Greece. Main Character - Odysseus Major conflict · Odysseus must return home and vanquish the suitors who threaten his estate. Rising action- The return of Odysseus to Ithaca; Penelope’s challenge to the suitors; the stringing of the bow Climax - when the beggar in the palace reveals his true identity as Odysseus

10 The Odyssey - Falling action – Odysseus fights and kill the suitors; they put to death the suitors’ allies among the palace servants.
