1) The BDP area has a high proportion of service sector workers “Service sector” = anything that isn’t primary (mining, agriculture) or secondary (construction, manufacture, energy etc) Source: Annual Business Inquiry, 2008

2) The BDP area has a large public sector workforce Source: Annual Business Inquiry, 2008 For every 100 full time equivalent jobs shed in the Public Sector locally there would be an additional 34 (19 in private sector) jobs lost, including: 15 additional public sector jobs 6 in distribution and retail 4 in business services 2 in hotels and catering 2 in other services 2 in transport and communications

3) The BDP area has a large number of small/new businesses In BDP approximately 84% of firms employed fewer than 10 people (2008) In comparison the national figure was 83% These “micro” firms provided 25% of all local employment In comparison the national figure was 21% Source: UK Business: Activity, Size and Location – 2009, ONS/Department of Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR)

6) The knowledge intensive sector is important in the BDP area The knowledge intensive sector consists of a range of business types from the… …manufacturing sector (electronics, chemicals, medicine, etc) …service sector (financial, real estate, telecommunications, etc) These are important as they make a disproportional contribution to GVA figures

7) Land for commercial development is in short supply in BDP The BDP Workplace Strategy (2008) identified Demand for new land by 2026 will be 184ha 50/50 split between offices and industrial Identified 216ha of land that could be available BUT only 74ha (34%) available in the short term For economic growth more available land needs to be brought forward Source: BDP Workplace Strategy (2008) Based on predicted demand before the recession 184 ha needed by 2026 50-50 split between office and industrial There’s 216 ha available in total, but only 74 ha available in the short term
