Lost sight due to damaged cornea can be restored through corneal transplantation
Cornea of donor eye is grafted to replace the diseased cornea of the patient.
A significant proportion of blind patients can have their sight restored through corneal transplantation

Eye should be donated within 6-8 hrs of death
Only cornea is used for Eye donation
Total removal time is minutes
Eyes are not bought or sold
10cc of blood is collected from donor’s body to rule out possibility of communicable diseases

Eye bank team will remove the eyes either at the hospital or at the home of the deceased
The identities of the donor and the recipient are kept confidential by law.

After donation
The donor’s family receive a certificate of appreciation from the Eye Bank.
Eyes are evaluated at the Eye Bank and only the ones deemed suitable are used for transplant, Others are used for research and education.
Corneal transplantation should be done within 2 – 3 days post-removal.
Recipients are notified on a first come first serve basis from the registry. TWO people gain sight from ONE PAIR of donated eyes.

An Eye Bank is a charitable organization
The eye banks facilitate removal of eyes, processing of eyes and evaluation of the eyes and distribute them to the needy.  
The first Eye Bank was set up in United states in 1945 at Newyork City.  
Around 500+ Eye banks in India.

Becoming a donor
A person wishing to donate eyes should make close family members aware of their intentions
If you are 18 years or older, just fill out a Donor Card.
Fill in your name and sign and date the card.
Please sign name in the presence of two witnesses.
Your witness should also sign the card
After the death of the person, family member needs to inform nearest eye bank or authorize Eye bank coordinators incase they approach

Switch off fans and switch on Air conditioner (if available)
Raise the head of the deceased slightly by placing a pillow underneath.
Place wet clean cloth over the closed eye lids.
Please ensure that the eyelids are properly closed.
Keep a copy of the death certificate ready (if available).
