1 Writing Body of an essay

2 Body The second part of your essay is called the body
This is the main part of the essay Each main idea that you wrote down in your diagram or outline will become one of the body paragraphs. If you had three or four main ideas, you will have three or four body paragraphs. Introduction Body Paragraph 1 Paragraph 2 Paragraph 3 Conclusion

3 Body For the first body paragraph you should use your strongest argument or most significant example unless some other more obvious beginning (as in the case of chronological explanations) is required. The first sentence of this paragraph should be the topic sentence of the paragraph that directly relates to the examples listed in the mini-outline of introductory paragraph. No matter what type of essay is being written, all body paragraphs need to be fully developed and provide supporting detail.  This detail can come in the form of personal examples, statistics, and/or quotes from an expert.  When writing an essay that requires the use of research and outside sources, this information should be used to support the topic sentence.

4 Important aspects of body paragraph
The following are important aspects of all body paragraphs: A clear topic sentence Specific evidence or supporting detail Examples Unity and cohesion Transitions between sentences and paragraphs A concluding sentence that ties the evidence or details back to the main point and brings the paragraph to a close

5 Tips A new point should be given in each paragraph.
Use pointers, eg, 'however', ‘in addition', ‘nevertheless', ‘moreover'. Provide supporting evidence for each point that you make. Ensure proper use of grammar, capitalization, punctuation. Indent each paragraph.

6 Topic Sentence Every paragraph should include a topic sentence that identifies the main idea of the paragraph. A topic sentence also states the point the writer wishes to make about that subject. Generally, the topic sentence appears at the beginning of the paragraph.

7 How to choose a topic sentence
The topic sentence should identify the main idea and point of the paragraph. To choose an appropriate topic sentence, read the paragraph and think about its main idea and point. The supporting details in the paragraph (the sentences other than the topic sentence) will develop or explain the topic sentence. Read all the supporting details in the paragraph and think about the ideas they discuss.

8 Example _________________________________________ . For example, a person can have breakfast in New York, board an airplane, and have dinner in Paris. A businesswoman in London can instantly place an order with a factory in Hong Kong by sending a fax. Furthermore, a schoolboy in Tokyo can turn on a TV and watch a baseball game being played in Los Angeles. a) Airplanes have changed our lives. b) Advances in technology have made the world seem smaller. c) The fax machine was an important invention

9 _____________________________________________
_____________________________________________ . I enjoy summer sports like water skiing and baseball. The weather is usually sunny and hot, so I can go to the beach almost every day. Gardening is my hobby and I spend many summer days working in my garden. Unfortunately, the days pass too quickly in summer. a) I like to garden in summer. b) Summer is my favorite season. c) Summer is too short.

10 __________________________________________________ . First and most
importantly, the work is very interesting. I learn new things every day and I get to travel a lot. In addition, my boss is very nice. She is always willing to help me when I have a problem. I have also made many new friends at my job. Last, but not least, the salary is fantastic.

11 ___________________________________________________ . He has
collected stamps and coins ever since he was a child. He is very proud of his valuable collections. Paul also enjoys painting and drawing. Recently he has become interested in gardening. Out of all his hobbies, Paul’s favorite one is reading. He usually reads at least one book every week. Paul keeps busy with all of his hobbies

12 Transitions Transitional phrases are useful for showing the reader where one section ends and another begins. In essence, they lead the reader from one section of the paragraph of another. Transitions make a writing clear and concise. It provides a connection between different parts of a writing.

13 Function They function as sign posts telling your reader how to process new information or idea and how to anticipate what to come next in the writing. The following are the different types of transitional devices: To prove a point: because, for, since, for the same reason, obviously, evidently, furthermore, moreover, besides, indeed, in fact, in addition

14 To add : besides, equally important, finally, further, furthermore, nor, too, next, lastly, what's more, moreover, in addition, firstly, secondly To conclude: summing up, to conclude, in conclusion, as I have said, hence, therefore, accordingly, thus, as a result, consequently.

15 To emphasize a point: definitely, extremely, obviously, in fact, indeed, in any case, absolutely, positively, naturally, surprisingly, always, forever, perennially, eternally, never, emphatically, unquestionably, without a doubt, certainly.

16 Exercise Paragraph 1 Next, add antifreeze to your windshield washer fluid; otherwise, the fluid will freeze and possibly break the container. First, put on snow tires if you plan to drive on snowy, icy roads very often. Driving in winter, especially on snowy, icy roads, can be less troublesome if you take a few simple precautions. Finally, it is also a good idea to carry tire chains, a can of spray to unfreeze door locks, and a windshield scraper in your car when driving in winter weather. Second, check the amount of antifreeze in your radiator and add more if necessary.

17 Paragraph 3 Later on, people began to write on pieces of leather, which were rolled into scrolls.
In the earliest times, people carved or painted messages on rocks. In the Middle Ages, heavy paper called parchment was used for writing and books were laboriously copied by hand. With the invention of the printing press in the middle of the fifteenth century, the modern printing industry was born. Some form of written communication has been used throughout the centuries.

18 A sample essay Introduction
"A dog is man's best friend." That common saying may contain some truth, but dogs are not the only animal friend whose companionship people enjoy. For many people, a cat is their best friend. Despite what dog lovers may believe, cats make excellent house pets as they are good companions, they are civilized members of the household, and they are easy to care for.

19 Paragraph 1 Firstly, people enjoy the companionship of cats. Many cats are affectionate. They will snuggle up and ask to be petted, or scratched under the chin. Who can resist a purring cat? If they're not feeling affectionate, cats are generally quite playful. They love to chase balls and feathers, or just about anything dangling from a string. They especially enjoy playing when their owners are participating in the game. Contrary to popular opinion, cats can be trained. Using rewards and punishments, just like with a dog, a cat can be trained to avoid unwanted behavior or perform tricks. Cats will even fetch!

20 Paragraph 2 Secondly, cats are civilized members of the household. Unlike dogs, cats do not bark or make other loud noises. Most cats don't even meow very often. They generally lead a quiet existence. Cats also don't often have "accidents." Mother cats train their kittens to use the litter box, and most cats will use it without fail from that time on. Even stray cats usually understand the concept when shown the box and will use it regularly. Cats do have claws, and owners must make provision for this. A tall scratching post in a favorite cat area of the house will often keep the cat content to leave the furniture alone. As a last resort, of course, cats can be declawed.

21 Paragraph 3 Lastly, one of the most attractive features of cats as house pets is their ease of care. Cats do not have to be walked. They get plenty of exercise in the house as they play, and they do their business in the litter box. Cleaning a litter box is a quick, painless procedure. Cats also take care of their own grooming. Bathing a cat is almost never necessary because under ordinary circumstances cats clean themselves. Cats are more particular about personal cleanliness than people are. In addition, cats can be left home alone for a few hours without fear. Unlike some pets, most cats will not destroy the furnishings when left alone. They are content to go about their usual activities until their owners return.
