2 Introduction We have chosen engineering because it uses a lot of maths. I know this because my dad is a mechanical engineer. Also we think the class will be interested in this job. My dad is DT teacher and he uses maths to make things.

3 What is a Engineer Engineers solve practical problems by using mathematical and scientific knowledge. There are lots of different types of engineers, some include mechanical, civil and environmental. Engineers need to know various skills e.g. drawing, a good speaker and good teamwork. The word engineer comes from Latin words meaning ‘devise’ and ‘cleverness’.

4 Civil Engineer In civil engineering you could be asked to build anything from bridges to tall buildings. If you were lucky enough you could build a football stadium. To be a civil engineer you have to have excellent maths and IT skills (computing skills). Civil engineers have to work between hours every week. You don’t need to build to be a civil engineer, you can work with things such as transport.

5 Mechanical Engineer Mechanical engineering is the practice of solving problems using machinery. It requires a lot of maths to measure things to the right length. As a mechanical engineer you could design a car or a safety harness for a ride. Mechanical engineers nowadays do most of their calculations on a computer.
