1 Scheme of Redemption

2 Goals of Our Study To learn how God moved from man's problem of sin to His solution of Jesus on the cross To understand how everything in the scriptures relates to, and points to, Jesus and the cross To understand how everything in the Bible reveals God to mankind who He is and what He is like Get a better understanding of how we got here tonight on the orange carpet

3 Main concepts of our study
"Scheme of Redemption" The plan of God, established before creation, to redeem mankind from sin View the Bible as a novel, with 66 different chapters The real division taking place at Genesis 3:6 rather than between Malachi and Matthew This division covers two drastically different worlds: The world prior to sin and the world after sin

4 Main concepts of our study
Genesis 1-2: God and perfection, man and innocence Genesis 3-12 – The Background of Redemption Genesis – Redemption through Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph Exodus 1-12 – Slavery In and Judgement On Egypt Exodus – Two Month Journey to Sinai Exodus 19-Numbers 10 – One Year at Sinai

5 Recap Moses up on Mt. Sinai for 40 days, getting the law from God
After Moses had been up on the mountain for 40 days, Israel demanded a “god” to lead them into the promised land Aaron makes an excuse for the calf Moses comes down from the mountain, severely disciplines the people, putting some to death. Removes sin from the camp Moses’s entreaty for God to not to destroy the people

6 Recap The Lord informs Moses that His angel will go before the people and will drive out the Canaanites, but says that He will not go with them Moses meets with the Lord in the tent of meeting, has a face to face conversation with Him Moses asks the Lord to reconsider saying that it’s a waste of time going to Canaan if God isn’t with the people Moses asks God to show him His glory

7 Moses’s conversation with the Lord
Exodus 33:12-13 – Then Moses said to the Lord, “See, You say to me, ‘Bring up this people!’ But You Yourself have not let me know whom You will send with me. Moreover, You have said, ‘I have known you by name, and you have also found favor in My sight.’ Now therefore, I pray You, if I have found favor in Your sight, let me know Your ways that I may know You, so that I may find favor in Your sight. Consider too, that this nation is Your people.”

8 Moses’s conversation with the Lord
Exodus 33:14-16 – And He said, “My presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest.” Then he said to Him, “If Your presence does not go with us, do not lead us up from here. For how then can it be known that I have found favor in Your sight, I and Your people? Is it not by Your going with us, so that we, I and Your people, may be distinguished from all the other people who are upon the face of the earth?”

9 Moses’s conversation with the Lord
Exodus 33:17-19 – The Lord said to Moses, “I will also do this thing of which you have spoken; for you have found favor in My sight and I have known you by name.” Then Moses said, “I pray You, show me Your glory!” And He said, “I Myself will make all My goodness pass before you, and will proclaim the name of the Lord before you; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show compassion on whom I will show compassion.”

10 Moses’s conversation with the Lord
Exodus 33:21-23 – But He said, “You cannot see My face, for no man can see Me and live!” Then the Lord said, “Behold, there is a place by Me, and you shall stand there on the rock; and it will come about, while My glory is passing by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock and cover you with My hand until I have passed by. Then I will take My hand away and you shall see My back, but My face shall not be seen.”

11 Moses’s conversation with the Lord
What’s happening here? Moses is feeling stressed He had been told many things by God He had been commissioned to bring Israel to the land of promise God knew him by name God would be with him He had found favor in God’s eyes God had told him that He would send someone with Moses, but the one (Aaron) who was sent just failed MISERABLY (golden calf)

12 Moses’s conversation with the Lord
What’s happening here? Now God is telling the people, due to the golden calf issue, that He’s not going into the land with them! But Moses is now feeling like he’s “in the dark” and like he’s being hung out to dry “You’ve told me that you’re with me, that I’ve found favor in your sight, and you want me to lead the people into the land. Yet now you say you’re not going? Are you kidding me??”

13 Moses’s conversation with the Lord
What’s happening here? Moses is looking for some affirmation that God will still be with him and will still be with the people He’s also looking for some knowledge and wisdom. “Let me know your ways and let me see your glory that I may know you!” Moses really seeking here to truly understand the mind and heart of God

14 Moses returns to Sinai Exodus 34:1-3 – Now the Lord said to Moses, “Cut out for yourself two stone tablets like the former ones, and I will write on the tablets the words that were on the former tablets which you shattered. So be ready by morning, and come up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and present yourself there to Me on the top of the mountain. No man is to come up with you, nor let any man be seen anywhere on the mountain; even the flocks and the herds may not graze in front of that mountain.”

15 Moses returns to Sinai Exodus 34:4-6 – So he cut out two stone tablets like the former ones, and Moses rose up early in the morning and went up to Mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him, and he took two stone tablets in his hand. The Lord descended in the cloud and stood there with him as he called upon the name of the Lord. Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth;

16 Moses returns to Sinai Exodus 34:7-9 – who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.” Moses made haste to bow low toward the earth and worship. He said, “If now I have found favor in Your sight, O Lord, I pray, let the Lord go along in our midst, even though the people are so obstinate, and pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us as Your own possession.”

17 Moses sees God Moses has ascended Sinai again and will spend another 40 days on the mountain with the Lord Moses sees God’s backside? What’s that all about?? Intriguing passage that has stumped many Recall back in chapter 33, Moses asks for insight into the very heart of God and asks to see God’s glory God replied saying that Moses could not see His face, because no man can see God and live

18 Moses sees God Moses sees God’s backside? What’s that all about??
God is rejecting Moses’s request to have full access to God and His ways God has already granted Moses a load of access, and has allowed Moses to have a very deep and personal relationship with Him But there are some things that God has withheld, and He has the right to do so, just as there are things that my children want to know that I simply refuse to explain Perhaps it was that mankind was not ready for that level of knowledge

19 God renews His covenant
Exodus 34:10 – Then God said, “Behold, I am going to make a covenant. Before all your people I will perform miracles which have not been produced in all the earth nor among any of the nations; and all the people among whom you live will see the working of the Lord, for it is a fearful thing that I am going to perform with you.

20 God renews His covenant
Exodus 34:11-12 – “Be sure to observe what I am commanding you this day: behold, I am going to drive out the Amorite before you, and the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Hivite and the Jebusite. Watch yourself that you make no covenant with the inhabitants of the land into which you are going, or it will become a snare in your midst.

21 God renews His covenant
Exodus 34:13-17 – But rather, you are to tear down their altars and smash their sacred pillars and cut down their Asherim - for you shall not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God - otherwise you might make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land and they would play the harlot with their gods and sacrifice to their gods, and someone might invite you to eat of his sacrifice, and you might take some of his daughters for your sons, and his daughters might play the harlot with their gods and cause your sons also to play the harlot with their gods. You shall make for yourself no molten gods.

22 God renews His covenant
Exodus 34:27-28 – Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write down these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” 28 So he was there with the Lord forty days and forty nights; he did not eat bread or drink water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.

23 Moses face shines! Exodus 34:29-30 – It came about when Moses was coming down from Mount Sinai (and the two tablets of the testimony were in Moses’ hand as he was coming down from the mountain), that Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because of his speaking with Him. So when Aaron and all the sons of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him. Moses begins wearing a veil to cover his face when he spoke with the people

24 Work on the tabernacle begins
What was the tabernacle? Simply put: a mobile place of worship It was where God would dwell among the people of Israel How was it built? Israel donated items to be used in the construction People with abilities were to contribute their time and effort to the project God also empowered Bezalel with the skills necessary to build the tabernacle

25 Constructing the tabernacle
Exodus – Covers the construction of the ark 39:42-43 – So the sons of Israel did all the work according to all that the Lord had commanded Moses. And Moses examined all the work and behold, they had done it; just as the Lord had commanded, this they had done. So Moses blessed them. Exodus 40 – The tabernacle is set up, all items put in place. God gives specific instructions on how they are to accomplish it

26 God’s presence in the tabernacle
Exodus 40:34-38 – Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. Throughout all their journeys whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the sons of Israel would set out; but if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not set out until the day when it was taken up. For throughout all their journeys, the cloud of the Lord was on the tabernacle by day, and there was fire in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel.
