Academic Libraries and Outreach: Creating Relevance  Through Learning and Service HBCU Library Alliance 7th Membership Meeting Tina D. Rollins Hampton University William R. and Norma B. Harvey Library

2 Everyone knows libraries are important
Everyone knows libraries are important!!!!! Why do we need to defend relevancy??? Lack of understanding regarding library purpose and services. Institutional budget cuts. Organizational culture. The age of technology……

3 Revisiting the Concept of Library as Place
A university is just a group of buildings gathered around a library. ~Shelby Foote Libraries have a unique place in academic communities. We provide services to not only the university, but also the surrounding community. We are multi-disciplinary. We promote research and access. We are essentially the hub of the campus.

4 Outreach as a Tool for Relevancy
Outreach activities help to promote library services and provide opportunities for learning and service to internal and external stakeholders. Outreach efforts must mirror the mission of your library as well as stay in line with the university’s mission.

5 Where do you start? Outreach begins with building relationships with library staff, administrators, faculty, staff and students. (Tip: Be a social butterfly, or be an stork) Find campus and community partners. Discuss with your staff what has worked in the past and listen to ideas regarding their interests. Research outreach efforts of other academic libraries and see if you can adapt some of their ideas to your library.

6 Outreach Efforts at Hampton University’s Harvey Library
To increase outreach efforts at the Harvey Library, staff committees were created to assist with programming and initiatives. Proposals were also solicited from individuals who wanted to work on other outreach efforts for the library. We also created and updated our Facebook and Twitter pages. Our website was redesigned to include areas for announcements and banners.
