1 Local District West Board Highlights May 2016

2 Pablo Gonzalez, a senior at Marlton School of the Deaf, has been offered the position as a student commissioner for the state Advisory Commission on Special Education.

3 Helen Bernstein High School students garnered
20 UC acceptances. 40% of students that applied to UCs were accepted, and 72% of those who applied to 4-year colleges were accepted.

4 Noted UCLA Professor Pedro Noguera visited classes at Hawkins High School and engaged in a Restorative Justice Circle with students from the 3 co-located schools: CHAS, RISE, and C:/DGAS.

5 The Honest Co. donated $50,000 to the Grandview Blvd
The Honest Co. donated $50,000 to the Grandview Blvd. ES garden program (Garden School Foundation). Additionally, Century Fox Studios helped build a reading garden. Lastly, Snapchat is doing volunteer service for community service day.

6 Three National Merit Scholars!
The latest US News & World Report rankings of the "Best High Schools" finds LD West's Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies (LACES) at #18 for California and #138 Nationally. LACES scored the highest among LAUSD schools. Three National Merit Scholars! At this year's state qualifying competition the LACES Speech and Debate Team had another outstanding performance. Science Bowl Team Places 2nd in Regional Competition MAGNET SCHOOL OF EXCELLENCE by the Magnet Schools of America.
