Receive These are the last words of David …The spirit of the Lord speaks through me, his word is upon my tongue. The God of Israel has spoken, the Rock of Israel has said to me: One who rules over people justly, ruling in the fear of God, is like the light of morning, like the sun rising on a cloudless morning, gleaming from the rain on the grassy land. The second book of Samuel, chapter 23, verses 1-4

Engage Edward was born in 1002, the son of the English King Ethelred and his Norman wife Emma. He lived in exile for many years and he was invited back to England in 1042 to become king. Edward's reputation for being a holy person was built on his personal, more than his political, qualities. He was concerned to maintain peace and justice in his realm, to avoid foreign wars, and to put his faith into practice. Continues on next slide …

Engage He was generous to the poor, hospitable to strangers. Edward chose to build an abbey on Thorney Island, by the river Thames, later it became Westminster Abbey. He died on 5 January 1066 and his remains were buried in the Abbey in October 1162.

Engage Some discussion ideas …
Is it better being a warrior leader or a peace-making leader? Video suggestions … Who was Edward the confessor – a short poem St Edward – at Westminster Abbey

Respond O God, who called your servant Edward to an earthly throne that he might advance your heavenly kingdom, and gave him zeal for your Church and love for your people: mercifully grant that we who commemorate him this day may be fruitful in good works, and attain to the glorious crown of your saints; through Jesus Christ. Amen Prayer for King Edward the Confessor.
