Predicting Outcomes Using Probability Lines & Writing Probabilities
3.6
2
Learning Goal Today we will learn about probability so that we can predict an outcome or several events using a probability line. We’ll know we’ve got it when we can express probability using fractions, decimals or percentages.
3
Vocabulary Certainty Decimal Decimal notation Favourable results
Fraction Fractional notation Impossibility Just as likely event Likely event More likely or less likely event Percentage Possibility Possible outcomes Probability line
4
What is Probability? It’s the possibility that an event will happen
Probability has a value of 0 to 1 0 = impossibility 1 = certainty
5
Probability
6
Probability It is a certainty that a card will be pulled
It is just as likely to pull a black card as a red card It is impossible to pull a card with a value greater than 13 It is just as likely to pull a heart, diamond, spade or club It is less likely to pull a face card than a number card
7
Writing Probabilities
Probability can be expressed as ratios or fractions Number of favourable outcomes Number of possible results # of favourable outcomes: # of unfavorable outcomes
8
Writing Probabilities
Probability can also be decimals and percentages 13 = 1 25% 52 =
