3 1. LAST FOR ONE crew Introduce
Last For One are the 1st Place winners of the 2005 International Battle of the Year, considered the “World Cup” of b-boying, and are one of the quintessential crews representing South Korea, a country that has become synonymous with b-boying greatness. Through works such as “Dynamic Korea,” a promotional video commissioned by the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and “All 4 One,” a commercial that became a popular hit on YouTube as well as being a work of art in its own right, Last For One has helped bring mainstream attention to a once-underground art. The New York Times, on occasion of the premiere of Last For One’s stage show, “Spin Odyssey,” at the 2007 Edinburgh Fringe, stated that Last For One is “The latest example of how a style many might consider an ’80s leftover… is being transformed into an international art form.” Last For One bears the further distinction of being a favorite performer for politicians and world leaders, having performed for Korean president Myoung Bak Lee at his 2008 inauguration, and for U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton during her tour of Asian nations in the spring of 2009, and for the U.S. Embassy in Seoul.

19 * Dance Musical “Spin Odyssey”
“LAST weekend at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, amid the countless performances that make the Fringe an avant-garde hotbed, a group of break dancers from South Korea presented “Spin Odyssey.” A 70-minute narrative piece loosely based on Homer’s epic, the work transports an Odysseus-like character through time to a hip-hop wonderland, where he learns about the meaning of heroism through break dancing. With its long choreographed phrases and daring acrobatic moves in unison, ‘Spin Odyssey’ is the latest example of how a style many might consider an ’80s leftover, as forgettable as leg warmers, is being transformed into an international art form.”

20 * Dance Musical “Spin Odyssey”
“Spin Odyssey” is a feature-length work of narrative dance theatre that fuses spectacular street dancing and side-splitting comedy, starring the world-famous b-boy team from Korea, Last For One It has performed to sell-out crowds in Korea and China and the UK, with a very successful run at the 2007 Edinburgh Festival Fringe. This entertainment extravaganza is in the tradition of popular stage hits like ZooNation’s “Into the Hoods” and Renegade’s “Rumble,” in which timeless stories from classical literature are paired with the youthful exuberance and vibrancy of the medium of street dance. SYNOPSIS “Spin Odyssey” is loosely based on, and liberally adapted from, the epic Greek poem, the “Odyssey.” Victorious at Troy, Odysseus and his men want nothing more than to be able to go home. However, the god Apollo is not about to let them off the hook so easy, and he’s determined to teach Odysseus, whose ego has become thick with the glory of victory, a humbling lesson. Apollo gives Odysseus a mysterious orb that he calls the “Spin,” explaining that it is a divine treasure that will magically, like Dorothy’s ruby slippers, transport him home. Odysseus accepts the gift, but instead of leading him home it leads him on a wild goosechase through a modern wonderland in which dance is the primary mode of human interaction. Here, all of Odysseus’ warlike prowess does him little good, and through on one zany caper after another he eventually learns that true heroism is not about strength and winning battles but about something far, far greater.

24 * Dance Musical “Spin Odyssey”
With Crews and Zoos, a B-boy World        Writer Julie Bloom writes at length about the Korean b-boy team Last For One and the show “Spin Odyssey” which is one of the most anticipated Korean productions to be performed at the 2007 Edinburgh Fringe. Bloom covers the history of the group and also analyzes the show as being a work that elevates a forgotten form from the 80s into a genuine International art form. The Funk Seoul Brothers Writer Adam Ramsay discusses the explosive growth of hip-hop culture. particularly in the form of the dance form known as b-boying, in South Korea. He also lays out theories that explain this phenomenon, and covers the b-boy crew Last For One and their production “Spin Odyssey,” which is to be performed at the 2007 Edinburgh Fringe. “Today’s Talk” Arirang TV’s interviews about “Spin Odyssey” In the interview, Bricklane’s International Coordinator, Kim discusses the differences between this work and the spate of other performances centered around the genre of b-boying that have been recently produced in Korea. Among these self-purported differences include a stated intention to avoid the usual trappings that previous b-boy shows have fallen into, in which the stories are all predictably based in a hip-hop setting with characters who are b-boys played by performers who are themselves b-boys in real life. The BBC interviews various people active in the b-boying scene in Korea including Yegam’s International Coordinator, Lucia Han and Soulgang’s International Coordinator, Daniel Jun Kim, in an attempt to understand the puzzling emergence of Korea as the dominant force in the hip-hop dance form known as b-boying. It also offers previews of the shows “Breakout” and “Spin Odyssey,” produced by Yegam and Soulgang, respectively.
