2. What is General Mathematics
Stage 2 General Mathematics will be taught for the first time in 2017.
General Mathematics extends students’ mathematical skills in ways that apply to practical problem solving. A problem-based approach is integral to the development of mathematical models and the associated key concepts in the topics. Topics cover a diverse range of applications of mathematics, including personal financial management, the statistical investigation process, modelling using linear and non-linear functions, and discrete modelling using networks and matrices.
Successful completion of General Mathematics at Stage 2 prepares students for entry to tertiary courses requiring a non-specialised background in mathematics.
Students who complete this subject with a C–  or better will meet the numeracy requirement of the SACE.

ASSESSMENT
The following assessment types enable students to demonstrate their learning in Stage 2 General Mathematics:
School Assessment (70%)
Assessment Type 1: Skills and Applications Tasks (40%)
Assessment Type 2: Mathematical Investigations (30%)
External Assessment (30%)
Assessment Type 3: Examination (30%)
Students provide evidence of their learning through eight assessments, including the external assessment component.
Students undertake:
five skills and applications tasks - otherwise know as tests (during the entire year)
two mathematical investigations – you will need to submit these both in hard copy form and electronically.
one examination.

9. The Course
Stage 2 General Mathematics consists of the following six topics:
Modelling with Linear Relationships
Modelling with Matrices
Statistical Models
Financial Models
Discrete Models
Open Topic – Share Investments
Students study FIVE topics from the list of six topics above. All students must study topics 1, 3, 4 and 5
The external exam will be based on the key questions and key concepts outlined in 3 topics. Topics 3, 4 and 5.

I highly recommend Texas or CASIO – textbook instructions are easy to follow and only cater for the TI and CASIO.

Devise a system for storing all lecture and tutorial handouts. (start with this sheet)
Good organisation is critical, especially when it comes to test and exam revision.
How will you store your class/textbook exercises? Notebooks are best and display books for each topic – sort this out before we begin in 2017.

All assessed work will be kept, and handed in at the end of the year for moderation.
It will consist of 5 tests and 2 investigations plus an external 2 hour examination at the end of the year. –
All assessment items are set and marked by Anna. The work is moderated by an external moderation panel at the end of the year to ensure uniform standards across the state.

Access the Australian Stock Exchange website
Spend some time familiarising your-self with this. You can access the website for each company through this site. In particular follow the links…. Education and resources…..online courses….view all shares courses, that are very good for understanding the basic working of the ASX
Start to follow financial reports in the media and the daily newspapers. You may get some ideas for your companies for the first Investigation.
You will need to select 1 company that is currently trading on the ASX.
This will be part of your first Investigation early in Term 1, but that will all be explained in the first lectures of 2017.
