What is the name of the capital city? You can usually spot the capital city on a map because it is usually printed in larger letters.

This is New Delhi. It is the capital city of India. The streets are very busy!

Much of India is farmland. Life in a village is very different to life in the city.

8 The Taj Mahal The Taj Mahal is India’s most famous landmark.
It is considered to be one of the wonders of the world. It was built by the emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favourite wife.

The National Animal of India is the Tiger . It is respected in India for its strength and grace, as well as its incredible power. The Indian tiger is also called the Royal Bengal Tiger.

The National Bird of India is the Peacock . Peacocks symbolize grace, pride, and beauty. Peacocks are often used in Indian mythology and folk stories.

The Ganges is India’s longest river. It is thought to be holy and many Indians who are Hindu or Sikh, bathe in it to cleanse themselves of all the bad things they have done. There is a ceremony called the Kumbh Mela which takes place every 13 years. It is the biggest celebration of the Hindu religion.

Cricket is a very popular sport in India. It was brought to India by the British over 250 years ago when Britain was in charge of India.

The weather is India is very varied, depending where in India you live. We have four seasons in England – can you remember what they are? In India there are three seasons – winter, summer and monsoon. Summer starts in March and lasts until the end of May. Monsoon is from June until October and Winter is November until the end of February. Even in Winter the weather in the south is very warm in sunny!

17 Food Food in India is very varied. Rice and bread are basic foods.
Indian people enjoy both spicy and sweet foods. Food is often eaten with the hands. A lot of Indian food is spicy.
