1 Athlete/Parent meeting
Be at your best on and off the court

2 WHAT DO YOU WANT FOR YOUR CHILDREN?

3 To the athletes How many of you are excited for this upcoming year in sports? How many of you enjoy sports more than school? I want you to think about the first couple weeks of practice, are the coaches taking it easy on you or is it Brutal? (I will get back to this) Goals of a few athletes if they want to volunteer

4 Why This Presentation? We care about our students and athletes.
We think we have good students, athletes, and teams in the River Bend School District. We want our students and athletes to be informed so they can make the right choices and become successful!!! The information in these slides comes from the American Athletic Institute The AAI has studied elite athletes for the effects of alcohol and drugs on training, and on a athletes brain.

5 John Underwood John Underwood is a former NCAA All-American, International-level distance runner and World Masters Champion. John has coached or advised more than two dozen Olympians, including World and Olympic Champions. He holds three International Olympic Solidarity diplomas for coaching and has been a crusader for drug-free sports at all levels. John’s innovative program, “PURE PERFORMANCE,” has gained international prominence. He is the Master Trainer for the New York Public High School Athletic Association Chemical Health program, which educates over 750 school districts and over 500,000 athletes yearly. He has conducted the only physiological case studies of the residual effect of alcohol on elite athletic performance. He has appeared as a guest commentator for ABC Wide World of Sports and has worked with nearly all sport federations, including the NCAA, NFL, NBA, NHL, the U.S. Olympic Committee, Sports Canada, the International Olympic Committee and the U.S. Navy Seals John Underwood is the leader of this training, he travels the country and speaks to schools and kids about the effects alcohol and drugs has on athletes, and how it impacts high school students not just while they are in high school but for the rest of their lives in some cases.

6 The Last Huddle How quickly it will pass by…
How unknowingly it will come to an end. The game will be over and you will not even realize the magnitude and significance of what has just ended. Later you will wish that you had called for a last huddle, to say to all your teammates that this is the last time we will be together like this… as a TEAM, as TEAMMATES… One of the most special times and experiences of your life will pass by. It will never be the same after this

7 Just like you You are our heroes… We watch you and wait for the day we will be just like you. Teach us how to live the life of an Athlete and be champions. Set the example for us, because we are the future of this program.

8 You are an athlete all the time,
Life of an Athlete It is not just that you put on uniform, or show up every day at practice or for the games… You are an athlete all the time, on and off the field. You represent your family, your community, your school , your teammates, your coach and YOURSELF. The American Athletic Institute began an initiative in the year 2000 to impact the use of social drugs by athletes at all levels of sport. The Life of an Athlete© program has been utilized in 39 states and by thousands of school districts. The program has been presented at the Office of Juvenile Justice National Leadership Conference for the past eight years. This promising prevention/intervention program focuses on all stakeholders in a community to help create a vigilant approach to insure programs of excellence and reduce drug use by athletes.

9 American Athletic Institute
Nearly 60% of H.S. Athletes use alcohol AAI has researched the effect of alcohol on elite athletic performance Proven Scientific Facts: Alcohol increases the time for recovery of androgenic training hormones (Up to 96 hours- 4 days) Alcohols diuretic effect diminishes water soluble vitamins required for hormone catalytic/conversion actions HGH (Human Growth Hormone) release is reduced up to 70% during the sleeping hours when release is at peak levels Alcohol greatly increases the release of cortisol (the stress hormone)  Cortisol negates training effect Alcohol decreases the protein synthesis for muscle fiber repair Alcohol can impair the blood glucose system for up to 36 hours Alcohol reduces the immune system capability - Athletes who drink get sick more often. Drinkers are twice as likely to become injured as non- drinkers Alcohol reduces performance potential by up to 11.4% in elite athletes and perhaps by as much as 15-30% in h.s. athletes Alcohol disturbs the REM sleep time, reducing the CNS restorative/recovery ability Alcohol impairs reaction time up to 12 hours after consumption Alcohol negatively affects heart lungs and muscle performance (<VO2 > Lactate < Ventilation >H.R.) Heavy episodic drinking results in projected losses of up to 14 days of training effect SUMMARY: Alcohol is a metabolic poison that crosses all barriers and negatively affects all systems of the human physiology simultaneously Time to educate your Athletes, Parents, Coaches… American Athletic Institute Visit americanathleticinstitute.org

10 14-24 THE TEN MOST DANGEROUS YEARS OF LIFE RISK>>>
Although we understand that teenagers are able to start doing more for themselves, it is during their teens and early 20s that we need to be the most involved with our youth. We need to talk and talk often about the risks and the importance of making positive choices. We lose more people to fatal accidents during this time than during all other ages.

19 1X DRUNK = 14 DAYS LOST TRAINING EFFECT DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME
American Athletic Institute has studied the impact of alcohol on condition in elite athletes. Impact has shown significant projections in lost physiological condition that correlates to as much as 14 days of lost training effect…for each time drunk… AMERICAN ATHLETIC INSTITUTE 2005 I told you I would come back to this. Is it worth sacrificing that much practice for one night of partying? DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME

20 What are the AFFECTS?

21 Start Up Speed 0-10 YDS. < 8%

22 Agility Reaction < 8%

23 Acceleration 0-20 YDS. < 6%

24 Explosive Power < 11%

25 LOST PERFORMANCE POTENTIAL
100% 90% 88.6% -11.4% -15-20% -20-30% Elite level athletes lost an average of 11.4% from their median performance level as a result of the residual effect of alcohol… So that means that if they go from up here at acceptable performance down to here, what do you think a high school athlete is going to lose, it is much more than that. That means that your top athlete in high school could be 30% better than what they are right now if they just gave up drinking. That’s the difference between an athlete and someone who thinks they are an athlete. NCAA High School American Athletic Institute

26 INJURIES Through a study they had 792 colleges division 1, 2 and 3 all they had to do was track football injuries in their training rooms and all they had to do was ask their athletes if they were regular alcohol users or non-user. The injury rate for the alcohol users was 58.4% and the injury rate for the non-users was 23.8%. You will get hurt. 2X HIGHER

27 Injury rates for non-drinkers 23.8%
Injury rates for drinkers 54.8% Injury rates for non-drinkers 23.8%

28 Alcohol decreases immune capability
DRINK Alcohol decreases immune capability GET SICK

29 ALCOHOL VS. TESTOSTERONE
Some teen males who drink heavily & regularly have testosterone levels similar to female levels. These men had testosterone levels at ratios like women. So ladies who are athletes at any time in their lives only have a 1:10 ratio of testosterone. Females athletes who drink heavily take a bigger hit than males because they have less testosterone to work with. It takes 96 hours for testosterone levels to come back up. 10:1 or 1:10 ALCOHOL VS. TESTOSTERONE

30 Alcohol stays in the female body longer
1:10 FEMALES TAKE A BIGGER HIT FROM HEAVY DRINKING Alcohol stays in the female body longer Females have less of the enzymes to breakdown alcohol

41 It doesn’t take so long…
This is the same person 10 years after he started drinking.

42 Growing Up Underage youth 12 to 20 years drink 11% of all alcohol consumed in the United States.  More than 90% of this alcohol is consumed in the form of binge drinks.  On average, underage drinkers consume more drinks per drinking occasion than adult drinkers.

43 National Institute of Drug Abuse reported that half of all high school seniors in America have experimented with illegal drugs, and about three-quarters have tried alcohol.

44 SOCIAL HOST PARENTS THAT HOST THE LETTER

45 ACCESS Where do they get it?

46 40% of children who start drinking before the age of 15 will become alcoholics at some point in their lives. If the onset of drinking is delayed by 5 years, a child's risk of serious alcohol problems is decreased by 50%. 40%

47 LIFE LIFESTYLE This is the first generation in modern history that will not outlive their parents…

48 A Shadow of Yourself Are you at your best or are you just a shadow of what you could be? Are you really an ATHLETE? Is the life you are living conducive to being at your best? Live the Life of an Athlete Athletes this is your team, your time. If you have teammates that are doing things they shouldn’t be doing, remove them from the situation. Parents please help your sons and daughters make positive decisions about drugs and alcohol. Thank you for listening and I hope you have some good conversations about the material that has been presented. We want you to be successful not just in high school activities, but in life!!!

49 Somewhere, someone is training…
Remember when you are not training… Somewhere, someone is training… and when you meet them… They will beat you. MATVEEV USSR
