3 D OUR MISSION OUR VISION Kyrene’s Dual Language Program is designed to prepare all students to meet educational life goals in both English and Spanish in order to make positive contributions to a global society. To inspire and engage our diverse community in continuous high academic achievement, personal growth, cultural awareness, high level of proficiency in English and Spanish for every student.

4 Dual Language Component
SM Dual Language Component Two teachers: 1 Spanish, 1 English Students begin the day with their homeroom teacher. They switch to the second classroom in the middle of the instructional day (approximately 2:30 minutes per classroom – not counting specials and lunch).

5 Language of the Subject
D Language of the Subject English Language Arts (Social Studies embedded), Reading Interventions and Math Interventions are taught in English only. Spanish Language Arts, Mathematics and Science are taught in Spanish only.

6 4th Grade Mathematics Engage New York is our core curriculum.
SM 4th Grade Mathematics Engage New York is our core curriculum. Investigations is our supplemental curriculum. Dream Box is for at home practice and for some enrichment at school. Instructional Focus Units: Place value, rounding, multi-digit multiplication and division, equivalence, order and operation of fractions, decimal fractions, measurement and geometry.

7 SM 5th Grade Mathematics Georgia and Engage New York are our core curriculum. Investigations is our supplemental curriculum. Dream Box is for at home practice and for some enrichment at school. Instructional Focus Units: Place value with decimal fractions, adding and subtracting fractions and decimal fractions, multiplying and dividing fractions and decimals, adding and multiplying with volume and area, classifying and measuring 2D geometric figures and geometry.

8 Spanish Language Arts Maravillas is the core curriculum for reading and writing. Maravillas can be accessed from home for additional practice. Trade books used for literature studies. Independent reading: Students should be checking out one Spanish book from the library each week. Some weeks I will give them a genre to check out for upcoming book reports.

CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts) curriculum Reading: identifying main idea, summarizing, inferencing, comparing, providing evidence to support reasoning, figurative language, vocabulary Writing: 5-paragraph essay form, organization, conventions Speaking and Listening: presenting, proper speaking conventions, listening skills

CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts) curriculum Reading: identifying theme, point of view, inferencing, providing evidence to explain reasoning, comparing text structures, 40 Book Challenge Writing: incorporate dialogue/quotations accurately, elaborate on 5-paragraph essay structure, using precise language Speaking and Listening: presenting, proper speaking conventions, listening skills

16 Spanish Language Assessments
AAPPL (ACTFL Assessment of Performance towards Proficiency in Languages) Fall Testing window will be Oct , 2017 Grade 4 will test in Interpersonal Listening and Speaking. Grade 5 will test in Interpretive Listening. Spring Testing window will be March 22 – 29, 2018 Grade 4 will test in Presentational Writing. Grade 5 will test in Interpretive Reading.

17 Homework policy Sent home Monday-Thursday Due the following day
Math/Science homework each night ELA/Social Studies homework each night 4th Grade ~ 15 minutes reading each night (written in agenda) for a total of 75 minutes weekly. 5th Grade ~ Weekly letter to teacher in English/ Book Report in Spanish at end of unit Projects/reports will occur intermittently (further directions and rubrics will be sent to accompany them)

JD Steps up the clip chart Blue- Good Day Black- Great Job Purple- Outstanding Students are rewarded for their outstanding days. Steps down the clip chart Yellow- Warning Orange- Teacher Choice Red- Parent Contact Jen Yellow- Your child has been given a warning and still chose to continue their behavior. They will be redirected by the teacher. Orange-Your child has continued their inappropriate behavior after being warned and redirected. They must fill out a redirection form and take it home for a parent to sign. Red-Your child has continued their inappropriate behavior for a fourth time. They must fill out another redirection form in another teacher’s room and take it home for a parent to sign
