29 Matt 1:17–25 (NASB) So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David to the deportation to Babylon, fourteen generations; and from the deportation to Babylon to the Messiah, fourteen generations.

30 Matt 1:17–25 (NASB) 18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. 19 And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned to send her away secretly.

31 Matt 1:17–25 (NASB) 20 But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

32 Matt 1:17–25 (NASB) 21 She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” 22 Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: 23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us.”

33 Matt 1:17–25 (NASB) 24 And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, 25 but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus.

34 Jesus, The Gift of Christmas
Matt 1:17–25

35 Jesus, The Gift of Christmas
Each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. (James 1:14–15)

36 Jesus, The Gift of Christmas
Jesus can save you from your sins because 1) He comes in poverty, 2) He comes in power and purity, and 3) He comes personally.

37 Jesus, The Gift of Christmas
1. Jesus comes in poverty.

38 Jesus comes in poverty “Once in our world, a stable had something in it that was bigger than our whole world.” - C.S. Lewis, The Last Battle

39 Jesus comes in poverty Jesus makes Himself poor by taking up our humanity. The Son of God rescues us by becoming like us.

40 Jesus comes in poverty To understand the greatness of Jesus’ salvation, we must consider the greatness of His descent.

41 Jesus comes in poverty “He was born of a woman. So, just like any other child, He came as a crying, cooing, bed-wetting baby boy It was a holy night, but it wasn’t silent. After all, whoever heard of a child coming out of the womb and staying quiet?...

42 Jesus comes in poverty Jesus wasn’t born with a glowing halo around His head and a smile on His face; He was born like us” (Platt, 20).

43 Jesus comes in poverty God grows for nine months in the darkness of Mary’s womb so that, on the third day, He could emerge victorious for mankind from the darkness of death’s tomb.

44 Jesus comes in poverty Since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity, so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. (Heb 2:14–15)

45 Jesus, The Gift of Christmas
2. Jesus comes in power and purity.

46 Jesus comes in power and purity
It was before Mary and Joseph came together that she was found to be with child (18).

47 Jesus comes in power and purity
Joseph understood appearances sometimes matter – that even though we may have a freedom to do something, there are times that it is better that we don’t so the world can clearly see and wrestle with who Christ is.

48 Jesus comes in power and purity
Matthew wants us to know “when God makes a promise in His Word, He fulfills it in the world” (Platt, 25).

49 Jesus comes in power and purity
The spotless righteousness of Jesus is ensured not only by Joseph’s noble patience but also by the powerful way Jesus enters the world.

50 Jesus comes in power and purity
Jesus is born without sin because the Holy Spirit powerfully interrupts the cycle of sin’s transmission through Adam by conceiving Christ in Mary.

51 Jesus, The Gift of Christmas
3. Jesus comes to us personally.

52 Jesus comes to us personally
This reality of His presence is communicated by His name – Immanuel (v. 23).

53 Jesus comes to us personally
“Matthew teaches that although God is transcendent over us, He is present with us. That is, in His glory, God is far above us, but in His grace, He is near to us” (Platt, 27).

54 Jesus comes to us personally
Who are the they who call Him Immanuel? Are you among the they?

55 Jesus comes to us personally
Jesus says, in John 10:27–28, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; 28 and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand.”

56 Jesus comes to us personally
We discover the lives we were made for when, in true humility, we give our lives to Christ who came down for us, and the Holy Spirit gives us a new heart that can know the nearness of God, God with us.

57 Jesus, The Gift of Christmas
Don’t let another Christmas go by without receiving Jesus, salvation from your sins, God for you and with you. Jesus is the gift of Christmas.

58 O Little Town of Bethlehem
CCLI #606984

59 O little town of Bethlehem How still we see Thee lie
Above Thy deep and dreamless sleep The silent stars go by

60 Yet in Thy dark streets shineth The hopes and fears of all the years
The everlasting Light The hopes and fears of all the years Are met in Thee tonight

61 For Christ is born of Mary And gathered all above
While mortals sleep the angels keep Their watch of wond’ring love

62 O morning stars together Proclaim the Holy Birth
And praises sing to God the King And peace to men on earth

63 How silently how silently The wondrous gift is giv’n
So God imparts to human hearts The blessings of His heav’n

64 No ear may hear His coming The dear Christ enters in
But in this world of sin Where meek souls Will receive Him still The dear Christ enters in

65 O holy Child of Bethlehem Cast out our sin and enter in
Descend to us we pray Cast out our sin and enter in Be born in us today

66 We hear the Christmas angels The great glad tidings tell
O come to us abide with us Our Lord Emmanuel CCLI #606984
