This topic is based on film music. Over the next eight weeks we will:
Examine the role of music in films which affects the listeners’ emotions.
Examine the role of a foley artist in the film making process.
Write, present and record a Podcast in groups on a film composer of your choice.
Develop our understanding of how music is written.
Choose an instrument and develop our skills on this.

3. Why do films have music? It can help add to the atmosphere
that the film-maker is trying to portray.
To heighten emotions e. g Love, fear, adventure and sadness
Discuss why we have film music with your partner

4. Even old fashioned silent movies had a “soundtrack”!
Before 1920’s there was no sound in films.
The piano played a crucial role in bringing
early films to life. Listen to this example.

5. Task 1 Write down the numbers 1-6 leaving three lines between each.
You are going to listen to the music of six silent movie themes. The music will be played three times.
Write an outline of the story to this silent movie.
Did anyone write the same story as you? Why might this be the case?
Discuss why we have film music with your partner

7. What might composers do to create the mood of a film?
Dynamics (Volume): Loud and soft?
Tempo (Speed): Fast and slow?
Instruments used and how they are used. For example, high pitched or low pitched, Pizzicato or Arco.

8. Sound FX
Sound FX in films are just as important as the soundtrack. Think about the impact of the Sound FX in this famous film scene.

Films often have different themes for characters, events, scenes, ideas or feelings.
Theme: clearly recognisable melody which can represent a character or a scene.
