1 Welcome to Music! This topic is based on film music. Over the next eight weeks we will: Examine the role of music in films which affects the listeners’ emotions. Examine the role of a foley artist in the film making process. Write, present and record a Podcast in groups on a film composer of your choice. Develop our understanding of how music is written. Choose an instrument and develop our skills on this.

2 Lesson Objectives/Success Criteria
Today we will… Look at how music is used in films to affect our emotions. Re-cap on our knowledge of music theory. We will know if we have been successful if we can… Describe the music heard and identify the instruments playing in each example. Can name the notes of the treble clef. Have chosen and made some progress on our instrument.

3 Why do films have music? It can help add to the atmosphere
that the film-maker is trying to portray. To heighten emotions e. g Love, fear, adventure and sadness Discuss why we have film music with your partner

4 Even old fashioned silent movies had a “soundtrack”!
Before 1920’s there was no sound in films. The piano played a crucial role in bringing early films to life. Listen to this example.

5 Task 1 Write down the numbers 1-6 leaving three lines between each.
You are going to listen to the music of six silent movie themes. The music will be played three times. Write an outline of the story to this silent movie. Did anyone write the same story as you? Why might this be the case? Discuss why we have film music with your partner

6 What types of film do you get?
Action/ Adventure Fantasy Horror Romantic Comedy

7 What might composers do to create the mood of a film?
Dynamics (Volume): Loud and soft? Tempo (Speed): Fast and slow? Instruments used and how they are used. For example, high pitched or low pitched, Pizzicato or Arco. Discuss in pairs what composer might do to create the mood

8 Sound FX Sound FX in films are just as important as the soundtrack. Think about the impact of the Sound FX in this famous film scene.

9 Horror Scene – Jurassic Park

10 Task – Music vs No Music As you watch the following clip without any sound and think about: What type of instruments do you think you’ll hear. How will these be played. What other sound effects will you hear.

37 Lesson Objectives/Success Criteria
Today we will… Plan how we are going to create a soundtrack to our film clip from The Simpsons. Record some of the sounds needed using a field recorder. Edit sounds from our Sound FX CD using Audacity software. We will know if we have been successful if we can… Choose and edit appropriate sounds for our film clip using a field recorder and music software.

38 Music and Sound FX As you watch our film clip, make a list of the type of music which would fit our clip and all of the Sound FX needed. Try to be original! The Simpsons We will edit these sounds on the computer using Audacity software.
