Presentation to the Shelton School District Board of Directors September 10, 2013

2 Comparison to State This presentation will compare the Shelton School District scores to those of students across the state Not an “average” – compares the percent of SSD who meet standard to percent of all students in the state who met standard on the tests Our challenge: 66.3% of students in SSD are eligible for F/R meals while 46.1% of students are eligible statewide – when our scores top state scores our kids are beating the odds!

3 Third Grade Reading Increased from 60.2% in 2012 to 64.1% in 2013
Statewide scores increased from 68.8% to 73.0%

4 Fourth Grade Reading Increased from 65.9% in 2012 to 66.7% in 2013
Statewide scores increased from 71.5% to 72.4%

5 Fifth Grade Reading Increased from 58.7% in 2012 to 62.4% in 2013
Statewide scores increased from 71.1% to 72.6%

6 Sixth Grade Reading Increased from 65.3% in 2012 to 66.1% in 2013
Statewide scores increased from 70.7% to 71.4%

7 Seventh Grade Reading Decreased from 76.3% in 2012 to 65.0% in 2013
Statewide scores decreased from 71.3% to 68.7%

8 Eighth Grade Reading Decreased from 63.1% in 2012 to 59.9% in 2013
Statewide scores decreased from 67.3% to 66.2%

9 Tenth Grade Reading Increased from 79.0% in 2012 to 81.8% in 2013
Statewide scores increased from 81.3% to 83.5%

10 Reading Highlights Reading scores have improved slightly at each grade level, with the exception of 7th and 8th The district reading scores mirror state trends (up at grades 3, 4, 5, 6, and 10 and down at grades 7, 8) There is still a fairly substantial gap between district and state reading scores at grades 3 and 5 (this is an area for further study)

Statewide scores decreased slightly from 65.3% to 65.2%

12 Fourth Grade Math Decreased from 57.8% in 2012 to 56.0% in 2013
Statewide scores increased from 59.4% to 62.5%

13 Fifth Grade Math Decreased from 50.0% in 2012 to 49.2% in 2013
Statewide scores decreased from 63.8% to 62.6%

14 Sixth Grade Math Decreased from 59.9% in 2012 to 56.4% in 2013
Statewide scores decreased from 61.5% to 59.3%

15 Seventh Grade Math Decreased from 64.5% in 2012 to 64.3% in 2013
Statewide scores increased from 59.2% to 63.7%

16 Eighth Grade Math Decreased from 63.4% in 2012 to 59.9% in 2013
Statewide scores decreased from 55.5% to 53.2%

17 All Grades Algebra EOC Increased from 70.4% in 2012 to 75.1% in 2013
Statewide scores increased from 71.1% to 80.7%

Increased from 69.6% in 2012 to 78.4% in 2013 Statewide scores increased from 79.1% to 89.4%

19 Math Highlights Math scores decreased at all levels except on the EOC exams for Algebra and Geometry At fourth grade state scores increased while district scores decreased, increasing the gap between district and state achievement Fifth grade still has a persistent achievement gap Though seventh grade scores decreased, they still topped the state – this is the second year in a row Though eighth grade scores decreased, they have topped the state for THREE years running! On the Algebra EOC scores increased at district and state, but the gap widened On the Geometry EOC scores increased at district and state, and a gap persists

20 Fifth Grade Science Increased from 54.4% in 2012 to 55.2% in 2013
Statewide scores increased from 66.3% to 66.5%

21 Eighth Grade Science Decreased from 57.3% in 2012 to 48.6% in 2013
Statewide scores decreased from 66.4% to 64.9%

22 All Grades Biology EOC Increased from 65.4% in 2012 to 80.5% in 2013
Statewide scores increased from 64.3% go 81.7%

23 Science Highlights Science scores increased at grade 5, about the same as scores increased across the state Scores decreased at grade 8, widening the gap between SSD and state scores In the second year of the Biology EOC, we remained on par with students across the state

24 Fourth Grade Writing Increased from 48.7% in 2012 to 55.7% in 2013
Statewide scores increased from 61.4% to 62.1%

25 Seventh Grade Writing Decreased from 78.1% in 2012 to 71.5% in 2013
Statewide scores stayed constant at 71.0%

26 Tenth Grade Writing Increased from 82.5% in 2012 to 84.2% in 2013
Statewide scores decreased from 85.4% to 84.9%

27 Writing Highlights Fourth grade writing scores have fluctuated over time, this year showing an increase greater than scores across the state Seventh grade scores topped the state for THREE years running! Scores have increased at grade 10 for the past 3 years, and are now nearly level with state scores

All students who have attended the Shelton School District for at least two years will read at grade level by the end of the third grade. ( Gr 3 MSP = 53.7%) GOAL Math Achievement Shelton School District math scores will improve every year at every grade level. (Did not meet) GOAL Graduation Rate The graduation rate will improve every year, overall and for all groups of students identifiable by ethnicity or economic status. ( % %)
