1 SAFETY IN THE CHEMISTRY LAB
What is a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)? designed to provide both workers and emergency personnel with the proper procedures for handling or working with a particular substance.

2 Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
MSDS's include any safety issue such as physical data (melting point, boiling point, flash point etc.), toxicity, health effects, first aid, reactivity, storage, disposal, protective equipment, andspill/leak procedures. These are of particular use if a spill or other accident occurs.

3 Hazard Identification label
Summarizes risks related to health, flammability and reactivity. A number scale indicates the level of risk.

4 MSDS Every company that manufactures or distributes hazardous chemicals in the United States must prepare a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). Mandated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) in their Hazard Communications Standard 29CFR This standard is commonly referred to as the Right-To-Know Law.

5 What items or formats are required on an MSDS?
ALL U.S. MSDS's must includde the items found on OSHA’s Form 17. You can include more items than OSHA requires. The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has a 16-part standard format which encompasses the areas given in the OSHA standard and adds a few more such as toxicology. In fact, OSHA now recommends using the ANSI format!

6 OSHA’s Form 17 Chemical Identity
Section I. Manufacturer's Name and Contact Information II. Hazardous Ingredients/Identity Information III. Physical/Chemical Characteristics IV. Fire and Explosion Hazard Data V. Reactivity Data VI. Health Hazard Data VII. Precautions for Safe Handling and Use VIII. Control Measures

7 MSDS QUIZ MSDS sheets must be written in: A OSHA Form 174 format
B ANSI format C EPA format D Any format, but must contain the information found in OSHA Form 174. E Any format; there are no specific requirements for content.

8 MSDS QUIZ MSDS's should be consulted: A In case of fire or explosion
B Before working with a chemical C In the event of a spill D To prepare risk assessments E All of the above

9 What is the Emergency telephone number for information from the manufacturer?

10 This manufacturer is located in:

11 Which of the following is NOT a synonym or trade name of Benzoic Acid?

12 The NFPA fire rating for benzoic acid is:

13 What is the OSHA PEL for benzoic acid?:

14 What is the Chemical Abstracts Number for benzoic acid?:

15 Does Benzoic Acid have a recognizable odor?
The boiling point of benzoic acid is:

16 Benzoic Acid is soluble in:

17 What is the vapor density of Benzoic Acid?

18 What is the flash point of benzoic acid?

19 Is a carbon dioxide extinguisher an acceptable extinguishing medium for benzoic acid?
Benzoic Acid is not compatible with:

20 Benzoic acid: Should not be stored.
Is one of the most reactive substances known Is considered stable at normal pressures and temperatures. Can spontaneously detonate, even when stored properly. Is a volatile gas that should be stored in pressurized cylinders.

21 Acute exposure to benzoic acid can cause:
Mild respiratory irritation (sore throat and coughing) Cystic fibrosis Lung cancer Myocardial infarction Bleeding of the mucous membranes.

22 The "reportable quantity" (RQ) for a spill of benzoic acid is:
In the event that benzoic acid is spilled in the driveway of your facility you can simply flush the material into the storm sewer. True False The "reportable quantity" (RQ) for a spill of benzoic acid is: 30 grams (1 ounce) 1 pound 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) 50 kilograms (110 pounds) 2300 kilograms (5000 pounds)

23 When benzoic acid is involved in a fire it:
may emit carbon monoxide and other toxic substances. can polymerize and/or detonate. will readily ignite. is insoluble in water, so you don't need to worry about it running into the sewer. No special precautions need to be taken..

24 When selecting a respirator you need to pay attention to:
The contamination level The working limits of the respirator Making sure that it has been properlyfitted (taking particular care with facialhair) and that the user has been properly trained. All of the above No particular precautions are needed.

25 What kind of eye protection is recommended for working with benzoic acid?
Safety glasses Splash-proof or dust-resistant safety goggles Face shield only UV protective glasses with side shields Full-face mask and respirator
