Binary Acids By: Lauren Isenor Theresa Boulos Shelby Vining
Jasmine Winmill Ama Aidoo
2
Definition compounds made up of two elements
one is hydrogen and the other a non-metal Formula : HX (aq) Aq means it’s a solution or dissolves in water. The weaker the HX bond, the stronger acid it is
3
Fact The most common binary acids are between hydrogen and halogen elements
4
Writing the Chemical Name
Write the prefix “hydro” Then take the root of the name for the second element End the first word of the compound name in “ic” Follow this with the word “acid” Hydro Stem of X ic acid
5
Hydriodic acid *o of the prefix is dropped
Examples HF(aq) Hydrofluoric acid HI(aq) Hydriodic acid *o of the prefix is dropped H2Se(aq) Hydroselenic acid
6
Writing the Chemical Formula
The hydro in the name stands for the Hydrogen (H) Get your second element symbol from the next part of the name where it’s suffix is located If it is not a halogen check the charge for the amount of hydrogens needed
7
Examples Hydrobromic acid Hydro(H) Bromic(Br) acid HBr (aq)
Hydrochloric acid Hydro(H) Chloric(Cl) acid HCl (aq) Hydrosulfuric acid Hydro(H) Sulfuric(S) acid H2S (aq)
8
1) Hydrophosphoric acid
Questions 1) Hydrophosphoric acid H3P 2)HCl Hydrochloric acid 3) Hydrastatic acid HAt
9
4) H3N Hydronitric Acid 5) Hydrobromic Acid HBr 6) HI Hydriodic Acid 7) Hydrocarbonic Acid H4C
10
8)H2S Hydrosulfuric Acid 9)Hydrofluoric Acid HF 10) H2Se Hydroselenic Acid
