Presentation on theme: "Simulation Past, Present, Future"— Presentation transcript:

1 Simulation Past, Present, Future
Karen Raney, LP, MS Paramedic Instructor Houston Community College

2 Objectives Describe true simulation past present and future
Quick steps into making a manikin look like a patient How to fit simulation into a budget

3 Old school style of simulation

4 Then we moved to this?

5 Now we have

6 What is Simulation It is the suspension of disbelief
You want the students to use their imagination to envision a realistic scene in a safe learning environment It can be in many forms simple to complex Short term or long term

7 What is simulation The challenge to simulation would be
Having a teachable student And an engaged student If the student believes they know it all what do they learn from the debriefing Needs to be a realistic scenario Simulation helps continue the expand the students education Making them critical thinkers

8 Simulation for Tomorrow
Focus on learner Millennials are history's first always connected generation, and well educated too according to PewResearch. Think about using teams Improvements in medicine translated to the sim lab, such as safety and reduced cost

9 Simulation Where do you begin? What are the goals of the simulation?
Build it with the end in mind Spend time thinking it through Do just throw it together

10 What is not simulation The days of verbalizing everything is over
For those that have not done a NR test this year that will kick you in the rear There should be minimal talking between the instructor and student Meaning no vitals given, only should give history when asked by the student

11 Challenges of Simulation
Manikin does not work You don’t have a Sim Tech to fix the problem We have to make the manikins look real Finding real life patients Do we ask colleges for bigger budgets and hire professional patients for each day of simulation I know what my college would say

12 Build Resources Make your manikins look real
Cleaning out closets bring up used clothing for the manikins Old furniture find a storage area to store it Watch what your neighbors throw out I built my pedi lab from swings, car seats, carriers from my neighbors trash Does your college have a warehouse of used furniture?

13 Lab space How many are using classroom space for your lab also?
Where to find space to build out a simulation area We were given the old library to build our simulation lab in to include an ambulance module also

14 No Simulation Lab? Don’t forget you can take them outside
Think about stairwells in your facility Look for small areas to simulate a bathroom We have a small room where our refrigerator and microwave are stored- a great area to put a manikin in, turn off the light and run scenarios.

15 This is a great teaching area for us

16 How does Simulation help with coursework
Hands on learner Able to apply knowledge from the book to real world Learning the steps of how to do something many times before having to do it in the field Muscle memory

17 Sim Tech’s Do you have someone else to run the manikins and moulage OR
Are you trying to start the class for the day and doing the moulage? Then the time to take it off When we do our field days for the basics it can take over an hour to get all of the patients moulaged

18 Moulage First thought if I can’t get it off my manikin my boss will kill me Who has the hours to get it off the manikin after the simulation? I found the answer

19 Moulage SimSticks sold by moulage concepts have worked the best and are quick to put on and take off.

20 Moulage Remember to always test any moulage on neck skins or old chest skins. Not everything comes off easy

21

22 It does not need to be perfect just the wow factor
First attempt not so great but it still gave the wow factor

23 So that they do this

24 And Not this

25

26

27

28

29

30

31 Does Simulation have to a manikin? Does it have to be human?

32

33 Final Thoughts To have a successful simulation Plan ahead
Keep achievable goals Don’t let it turn into play Make the manikin look realistic or give the wow factor Debrief after the scenario Don’t put the student down but build them up Make it a fun productive day
