Hearts, Minds and Music I was asked to tell a few stories about music but I decided to let music tell its own story. Music has a powerful story to tell if we have ears and hearts and minds to hear.

When king Benjamin gave his farewell address he gathered his people and said...
I have not commanded you to come up hither to trifle with the words which I shall speak, but that you should hearken unto me, and open your ears that ye may hear, and your hearts that ye may understand, and your minds that the mysteries of God may be unfolded to your view. [Mosiah 2:9]

Stories behind the Hymns
When the Lord’s apostles meet in in modern times, the singing of hymns is still part of their meetings. (They)rotate the privilege of selecting the opening song. Most of us record the date each hymn is sung. According to my records, the opening song most frequently sung during the decade of my participation has been “I Need Thee Every Hour” # Dallin H Oaks, Worship Through Music, Ensign Nov 1994, 9

Lead, Kindly Light is a hymn with words written in 1833 by John Henry Newman as a poem titled "the Pillar of Cloud". In some hymnals, one may find a fourth verse added by Edward H. Bickersteth, Jr. It is usually sung to the tune Lux Benigna, composed by John Bacchus Dykes in 1865; or to Alberta, by William H Harris. As a young priest, John Newman became sick while in Italy and was unable to travel for almost three weeks. In his own words: Before starting from my inn, I sat down on my bed and began to sob bitterly. My servant, who had acted as my nurse, asked what ailed me. I could only answer, "I have a work to do in England." I was aching to get home, yet for want of a vessel I was kept at Palermo for three weeks. I began to visit the churches, and they calmed my impatience, though I did not attend any services. At last I got off in an orange boat, bound for Marseilles. We were becalmed for whole week in the Straits of Bonifacio, and it was there that I wrote the lines, Lead, Kindly Light, which have since become so well known.

Music used on very important occasions
A grand choir sang when God laid the foundations of this world (see Job 38:7), Christ’s birth At His Second coming – text in D&C 84 In the upper room – “he sang an hymn” right before Gethsemane Isaiah – “the rocks will sing” Moroni carries a trumpet The book of Samuel lists all the composers and instrumentalists in the temple of Solomon he considers the song of the righteous to be a prayer unto him (see D&C 25:12).

Hearts & Hymns "Inspirational music is an essential part of our church meetings. The hymns invite the Spirit of the Lord, create a feeling of reverence, unify us as members, and provide a way for us to offer praises to the Lord.“ -Hymns ix

Hearts & Hymns “The world grows increasingly noisy Raucous music, with obscene lyrics blasted through amplifiers [is] gaining wide acceptance and influence over our youth “This trend to more noise, more excitement, more contention, less restraint, less dignity, less formality is not coincidental nor innocent nor harmless.

“The first order issued by a commander mounting a military invasion is the jamming of the channels of communication of those he intends to conquer. “Irreverence suits the purposes of the adversary by obstructing the delicate channels of revelation in both mind and spirit” (Boyd K. Packer, “Reverence Invites Revelation,” Oct general conference).

All spirits were subdued and receptive
Large spirits in those little bodies were clamoring for more of the exciting outdoor activities All spirits were subdued and receptive We had a similar experience in our family. Last spring some of our children and fourteen of our grandchildren had a family outing in the mountains. One of our activities was a meeting to share experiences and testimonies. We gathered at the appointed time, but the little people were only gathered in body. The large spirits in those little bodies were clamoring for more of the exciting outdoor activities they had been enjoying. The cabin where we met was too small to contain them, and it seemed as if a dozen restless children and their outcries were ricocheting off the walls in every direction. Grandparents will appreciate the apprehension I felt at trying to sponsor something serious in that setting. Suddenly the instinctive wisdom of young mothers rescued our efforts. Two mothers began to sing a song familiar to the children. Others joined in, and within a few minutes the mood had changed and all spirits were subdued and receptive to spiritual things. I offered a silent prayer of thanks for hymns and for mothers who know how to use them! Dallin H Oaks, Worship through Music, Ensign, Nov 1994

"Behold, the Lord requireth the heart and a willing mind" (D&C 64:34).
Only with heart and mind working together--or, in more common language, only with a broken heart and a contrite spirit--can we come to that state of serenity that Paul calls a peace "which passeth all understanding." But listen to the way Paul communicates this promise: "And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:7).

Psalms and Devotionals
The hymnbook could be viewed as our latter-day equivalent of the psalms. “The Lord Is My Shepherd” (Hymns, no. 108; Psalm 23), “The Lord Is My Light” (Hymns, no. 89; Psalm 27:1), “How Great Thou Art” (Hymns, no. 86; Psalm 8:3–9; 9:1–2), “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” (Hymns, no. 72; Psalm 23:6; 150).

Come Thou Fount 1 Samuel 7:12-14
Come, Thou Fount of every blessing, Tune my heart to sing Thy grace; Streams of mercy, never ceasing, Call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, Sung by flaming tongues above. Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it, Mount of Thy redeeming love. 2. Here I raise my Ebenezer; Hither by Thy help I’ve come; And I hope, by Thy good pleasure, Safely to arrive at home. Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love; Here's my heart, O take and seal it; Seal it for Thy courts above.

The First Presidency said:
“Inspirational music is an essential part of our church meetings. The hymns invite the Spirit of the Lord, create a feeling of reverence, unify us as members, and provide a way for us to offer praises to the Lord. “Some of the greatest sermons are preached by the singing of hymns. Hymns move us to repentance and good works, build testimony and faith, comfort the weary, console the mourning, and inspire us to endure to the end” (Hymns,ix). • Several psalms speak of singing as making a “joyful noise unto the Lord” (Psalm 98:4; 100:1; see also 66:1; 95:1–2). How can we make better use of hymn singing in our Church meetings and homes, ensuring that it is joyful and meaningful? • At the Last Supper, Jesus and his Apostles sang a hymn (Matthew 26:30). How do you think singing a hymn helped Jesus and his Apostles prepare to fulfill the work that was before them? • Just before the Prophet Joseph Smith was martyred in Carthage Jail, he asked John Taylor to sing “A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief” (Hymns,no. 29; see also B. H. Roberts, A Comprehensive History of the Church, 2:282–84). How do you think the singing of this hymn helped the Prophet?

Hymns in Families “Music has boundless powers for moving families toward greater spirituality and devotion to the gospel. Latter-day Saints should fill their homes with the sound of worthy music."
59
Encourage all to sing. Remind them that the song of the righteous is a prayer to God (see D&C 25:12). Encourage students to memorize the hymns. Tell a brief story about how a hymn blessed someone’s life. Give brief background information about the hymn or its author or composer. Have students conduct the hymns. Ask a student in advance to choose a favorite hymn and tellwhy it is meaningful. Have a hymnbook for every student if possible.

Hymns in our personal lives
The hymns can greatly benefit us as individuals. Hymns can lift our spirits, give us courage, and move us to righteous action. They can fill our souls with heavenly thoughts and bring us a spirit of peace. . . . Let us memorize and ponder them, recite and sing them, and partake of their spiritual nourishment." (First Presidency preface to Hymns, pages ix–x.)

I wonder sometimes if we realize the importance of music
I wonder sometimes if we realize the importance of music. I wonder if we know that the Lord Himself is concerned about it. He has given us the information that the song of praise is a prayer unto Him. In our day He has given revelation about music. He gave instruction that Emma Smith was to gather the hymns that were to be sung in the Church. ( “Pres. Smith's Leadership Address,” Church News, Feb. 16, 1946, 8.)
