4 Cordillera - meaning “knotted rope,” is a name given by the Spanish Conquistadors when they first saw jumbled rolls and dips of this long-range traversing the northern part of Luzon Island

5 BASIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE REGION
1. Basically have rugged and sloping terrain, towering mountain peaks, sharp cliffs and ridges are the main features of the region 2. Most Cordillera people lived along the cost before the arrival of the Spaniards but later moved to the mountains to avoid foreign rule

6 3. They practice agriculture, woodcarving, cloth and basket weaving for livelihood

7 4. They practice animism and believe in the existence of anitos to whom they offer animal sacrifices as well as rituals to ask favors, thank and appease their gods.

8 6 Ethnic Groups of the CAR
1. Abra: Tinguian/Itneg 2. Apayao: Apayao/Isneg 3. Benguet: Ibaloi 5. Ifugao: Ifugao 4. Kalinga: Kalinga 6. Mountain Province: Bontoc All of the six indigenous groups from the CAR are collectively referred to as Igorots

9 Traditional Music in the CAR
1. Music is very much part of life and living 2. Have a rich variety of songs and music performed on instruments 3. Often performed in groups, all members of the community are welcome and encouraged to join the singing, dancing and playing of instruments 4. Their music is communal and participatory 5. Songs are usually in unison of pentatonic melodies

10 6. Music and other components of their culture are transferred from generation to generation through oral tradition. Oral tradition is cultural material and traditions transmitted orally from one generation to another Oral may refer to speech communication as opposed to writing

11 Important activities where music is utilized:
1. Peace pacts 2. Healing rituals 3. Invocation of the gods 4. Rites of passage 5. Weddings and festivities 6. Other life cycle events such as birth, coming of age, work, marriage and death
