1 Teachers & Librarians: Working Together
Francesca Taylor School of Library & Information Science Why should teachers & librarians collaborate? Factors Impeding Upon Collaboration A false understanding of the teacher librarian role Lack of time Methods of Collaboration Jointly organized events and schedules for library use Providing teachers with instructional materials when asked Develop collections and references for instruction Planning instructional objectives with teachers Integrating library curriculum and content curriculum Teaching lessons that have been co-planed Implementation of the collaborative practices described above throughout a school or school district (Montiel-Overall 2009) Results of Collaboration Correlation between teacher/librarian collaboration and academic achievement More effective use of resources and teaching time Integration of educational technologies A reduced teacher/student ratio Conclusion Teachers and librarians need to recognize the range of teacher/librarian collaboration and focus their efforts toward collaborative practices that are most beneficial to student achievement. Every effort should be made to shift from traditional practices between teachers and librarians to high-end collaboration. The results that come from teachers and librarians collaborating are beneficial. Bibliography This graph represents a continuum of collaborative practices ranging from low level collaborative endeavors (Model A) to highly collaborative endeavors (Model D) that lead to improved academic achievement (Montiel-Overall 2009).
