Student Achievement
The extent to which Brighton students achieve the goals of the K-12 Library Media Program and meet local, state and national standards
The Work of the Organization
The extent to which the district supports student achievement through:
Curriculum development, instructional practices and assessment
Learning environment and resources, and
Staff leadership, professional development and advocacy

4. Student Achievement Goals of Student Learning in Library Media
Information literacy
Students and staff are effective users and creators of ideas and information
They practice critical thinking in reading and research
Social responsibility
Students share knowledge and participate ethically as members of our democratic society
Lifelong reading and learning
Students have high levels of reading literacy
They are motivated readers in school and in the community
They become independent lifelong learners and readers

7. Limitations
Lack of available and/or standardized data sets resulted in a reduction in the scope of the program evaluation
Lack of standardized survey instruments necessitated locally developed surveys.
Language limitations may have led to confusion as indicated by a large number of “not sure” responses
NYS Library Media Programs are undergoing changes in standards governing instruction and student learning expectations which resulted in a moving target

Across the K-12 continuum
Students are being successful
Students reported a strong love of reading
Students support for the library
Students value the work they do in the library
Students consider the library “a great place to be”
Teachers value the library and services offered
Librarians considered highly regarded leaders and frequent committee participants

9. Results – Areas of Opportunity
We learned
Our ability to assess skills and abilities associated with information literacy proficiencies is inconsistent
Explicit integration of the library program into curricular areas is not well defined
Library media curricula has not been updated to reflect new standards
There are concerns about space, scheduling, staffing, and size/age of materials collections

10. Recommendations: Academic
Develop a K-12 Library Media Program continuum
Update K-12 library media curriculum maps reflecting
New standards
Student learning targets
Information literacy skills and research found in district curriculum maps
Increase opportunities and expectations for collaboration between library and classroom
Identify and overcome obstacles to increased collaboration
Create organizational supports to ensure effective delivery of instruction
Develop measures that assess learning within the K-12 Library Media Program
