Media is about messaging It refers to the communication of information through various ways

5 Different types of media
Media can be divided into three main categories: Paid media - Publicity or awareness that has been paid for or purchased, such as advertising (TV, print, online) or direct mail campaigns Owned media - Communications managed through internal platforms, such as your own website or social media platforms Earned media - Editorial coverage or media mentions reported by third parties, such as news organizations, external social media channels or word of mouth Media can also be classified as old media or new media

7 Old Media Old or traditional media includes broadcast and print sources such as TV, newspaper, radio, magazines and flyers Key characteristics: - Typically one-way communication - Delivered at a specific time - Limited geographic or jurisdictional reach - Strives to maintain journalistic integrity and standards

8 New Media New media is content that is easily accessible on devices through the internet, such as online sources and social media platforms Key characteristics: - Interactive - User-driven - Borderless - Functions in real-time

9 The News Media The news media play an essential role in contributing to a well-functioning democracy It is their job to inform citizens about current affairs and ensure that our politicians are honest and open, and are held responsible for their actions

11 Facts vs. Opinions The news media usually provides factual coverage to inform the public without letting opinions (biases) interfere The news media also produces opinion pieces or editorials, where their editorial team, columnists or pundits will openly share their opinions and analysis (commentary)
