3. SSSC Registration
We are the regulator for the social service workforce in Scotland. We register social service workers, setting standards for their practice, conduct, training and education and by supporting their professional development.
Registration commenced in April 2003
There are 21 different parts of the Register

5. Future Dates for Mandatory Registration

Workers in Housing Support and/or Care at Home
The Register will open in October 2017 and registration will become mandatory in 2020
As this is such a large group of workers it is likely there will be at least a 12 months prior deadline for receipt of applications
It is estimated that this category makes up about 50,000 workers which is a third of the Register
All workers new into their role are required to be registered within six months of starting in the new post. to employers outwith this timescale.

6. WHAT WILL HAPPEN WHEN THE REGISTER IS OPENING
Once we receive confirmation of the date of registration we will send an or a letter to managers of all services to advise of the dates and the key messages.
We will also include a communication to pass to all workers who are required to be registered.
Workers must be working in a service regulated by the Care Inspectorate to be eligible for registration. Workers cannot apply for registration in advance of being recruited into a role.
Volunteers are not eligible to register
These users are a mixture of people applying for registration, people who are already registered and maintaining their registration, and employers and universities.

9. Who is responsible for registration
It is an individual registration and it is the responsibility of the registered worker to maintain their registration by:
- complying with the Codes of Practice
- completing the required post registration training and learning
- keeping the SSSC up to date with changes to your circumstances
- paying your annual fee
- renewing your registration
- meeting a condition on your registration
Registration will be removed if it is not maintained and a worker cannot continue in their role.
Have discussions about registration at one to one meetings or team meetings.
These users are a mixture of people applying for registration, people who are already registered and maintaining their registration, and employers and universities.

10. Processing Applications
It can take up to 60 working days to process an application
Workers should apply for registration as soon as possible to ensure they are registered when they should be
Most common delays in processing applications:
Inaccurate or no PVG information
No copy of qualification certificate

11. Employers Need to Monitor Registration of Workers
Although it is the worker’s responsibility to get registered and maintain their registration. It is the employer who would be committing an offence if they employ someone who is not registered.
The Care Inspectorate check registration of workers.
MySSSC allows countersignatories and those with online access to monitor registration:

Check those who are registered
Monitor overdue annual fees and renewals
Receive alerts when someone is removed from the Register

12. 41% of workers on our Register have a qualification condition
Using MySSSC you can check which of your staff have to achieve a qualification and by when
Prioritise access to qualifications to ensure they meet their condition
Failure to meet a condition will result in removal from the Register
