14 Text Says Thursday: 11/3 All have a subject of perseverance
Langston Hughes “Mother to Son” Maya Angelou “Still I Rise” Gilman “The Obstacle” Tupac Shakur “Rose From the Concrete” Make a graphic organizer that includes all of the poems we have read so far. Briefly summarize each and explain how each is similar or different.

15 Essay Time! You must pick one of the following poems to write your essay one: “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes “The Rose from the Concrete” by Tupac Shakur “The Obstacle” by Gilman You may not pick, “Still I Rise” First step: Draw the rhetorical triangle on the top of your paper:

16 Rhetorical Triangle Model:
Message and Logos: The subject is about perseverance and how she continues to rise up from the struggles and oppression from people who want to see her fail. Important Lit. Devices: Tone Similes Repetition Put the title here: “Still I Rise” Speaker and Ethos: Maya Angelou, African American Women who lived during the civil rights and was raped as a small girl. The poem is autobiographical. Audience and Pathos: Angelou targets both her oppressors in this poem– showing them she will not be held down and victims like her who have been pushed down.

17 Speaker and Ethos Paragraph:
Start with a strong topic sentence that introduces the point of your paragraph: Who is the author? What is their background and how did that affect their writing style? Give specific details about the author’s life that influenced their poetry Use evidence or examples to support your commentary Look at the models for help

18 Maya Angelou wrote “Still I Rise” as an autobiographical poem discussing her own struggles in life. Angelou lived a difficult life, being an African American women during the civil rights movement. She was not only discriminated against because of her race, but also her gender-- she was raped as a young girl. These struggles are revealed in her poem through heartbreaking descriptions like, “Did you want to see me broken?/ bowed head and lowered eyes?” (14-15). Knowing the struggles of Angelou’s life reveal her strong ethos and the simple fact that she did not give up through the worst parts of her life; in fact, it is these obstacles in life inspired her to try harder and push herself more, which makes her poem all the more powerful. Start with a clear topic sentence introducing the reader to the poem and author. Give specific examples of the author’s life. Cite evidence from the poem that connects to the writer’s life. Make sure to embed and cite line numbers. Elaborate on the evidence. Explain how it connects and the impact it has on the overall poem.

19 Message and Logos Paragraph
What is the subject or theme of the poem? How did the author reveal this theme? You will need to pick one literary device to focus on. Ex: Maya Angelou’s powerful similes reveals her theme of persevering through oppression. Again, see models for guidance.

20 Using her own life as inspiration, Angelou discusses the heartbreaking challenges she encountered, but also the optimistic hope she has for herself. She reveals the subject of perseverance through powerful similes that show her tough and sassy personality. For example, in the second stanza, she uses the simile, “cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells/ pumping in my living room” (7-8). Angelou uses the figurative comparison of an oil well to represent her success or wealth. She is inferring that she walks with confidence, which coming from a black women in the seventies must have caused controversy. She writes this simile to show that she doesn’t care what her oppressors will say or think about her– she will never give up her confidence. Start with a clear topic sentence introducing the reader to the theme/subject and the literary device you picked. Cite evidence from the poem that shows this literary device. Make sure to embed and cite line numbers. Elaborate on the evidence. Explain how this literary device is used to show the message of the poem.

21 Audience and Pathos Paragraph:
Who is the author specifically targeting? How can you tell? What literary devices help the author target this group of people? Ex. Angelou targets her oppressors or anyone trying to push her down in her life by using a triumphant tone and mocking questions.

22 Angelou’s poetry has been appreciated by many, but she was specifically targeting her oppressors in “Still I Rise.” This audience is revealed through a list of questions directed toward the bullies in her life, like her line, “does my haughtiness offend you?” (17). She targets these questions towards the people who have tried to hold her down in her life like her rapist or white oppressors. She responds to these questions with a triumphant tone that reveals her perseverance. No matter the situation, she always repeats the line, “still I’ll rise” in each stanza to show her own resiliency in the face of adversity. She is showing no matter what anyone tries to do, she will always succeed over them. Start with a clear topic sentence introducing the reader to the audience and how you can tell it is directed toward them. Cite evidence from the poem that shows this audience and literary device. Elaborate on the evidence. Explain how this literary device is used to reveal the audience of the poem.
