3. Background Information
The idea of the Tanzania Center is based on the results of a Pilot Project initiated by the United Nations ICT4SIDS Partnership.
The primary objective of this Pilot Project is to use the latest digital innovations for rapid advancement of human capacity building in STEM in the least developed countries (LDCs). Human Capacity Building (i.e., education) is the principle focus of the UN Sustainable Development Goal4 (“Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all”) and Samoa Pathway Declaration (Section 11: Urgent Human Capacity Building Needs).
Harrisburg University of Science and Technology, an active member of the ICT4SIDS Partnership, has played a leading role in the Tanzania Pilot Project in collaboration with the Tumani University located in the Mbeya Region of Tanzania.
The primary focus of the Tanzania Pilot Project is on educating school teachers in ICT so that they can improve the ICT skills of the students in Tanzania. Specifically, the Pilot Project offered courses on using computers in classrooms especially science subjects (e.g., Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Information Systems and Computer Applications) and also using computers in office environments (e.g., Microsoft Office skills). The initial plans of the Pilot Project were presented at the UN Infopoverty World Conference in April The Pilot Project has clearly demonstrated the need for ICT education in Tanzania -- the applicants for the classes for 30 students exceeded 100.
The initial objective of the HU-Tanzania Stem (HTS) Center is to focus on ICT Education first and then broaden the scope to other STEM topics based on demand. Our initial target groups are school teachers who want to use ICT in teaching their respective courses and also the drop out children from schools because they do not see the relevance of education to their lives.

6. Tanzania: Educating School Teachers in ICT
Project Vision
Educating school teachers in ICT program to open life-changing opportunities for teachers and students through quality education.
The purposes of the project are:
Using Computers in Classrooms: Teaching science subjects (Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Information Systems and Computer Applications). This will equip teachers with the knowledge of how to use computers to research and to teach their respective courses.
Using Computers in Office Environment: Training scholars to use computers in their offices to do different activities. Computers have become a way of life. Most people don't have the basic understanding and knowledge of computers, making computer training in demand.
Facility: The project is being done at TUMAINI UNIVERSITY MAKUMIRA MBEYA CENTRE – (TUMA-MC).

The University has computer laboratory, language laboratory, nursing laboratory and a library.
