1 Preparing for the Year 1 Phonics Screening
The aliens are coming! Blighp! Preparing for the Year 1 Phonics Screening

2 What is phonics? Children are taught to read by breaking down words into separate sounds or ‘phonemes’. They are then taught how to blend these sounds together to read the whole word. Children have a 30 mins phonics lesson each day as well as other phonic games throughout the day and they are encouraged to use these strategies to read and write in other lessons. There are around 40 different sounds.

5 Reading an Alien Word We ask the children to remind me what we do first when presented with an alien word Spot the special friend (children look at the word to see if they can spot any digraphs, split-digraphs and trigraphs that they recognise). FRED TALK the word. This is a RWI term but means sound out the word. Say the word *Year 2 pupils also take part in this screening if they failed to meet the required standard in Year 1. I regularly reinforce that an alien word is a made up word. When we say it, it is not supposed to make sense. I feel it important to make this concrete, as children are taught to think carefully about words that they read in books to check that they do make sense. I find this approach gets the children used to looking very carefully at words. In the screening no prompts are allowed by adults.

6 Why are the children being screened?
Every Year 1 child in the country will be taking the phonics screening check in the same week in June. The aim of the check is to ensure that all children are able to read by the end of year two. This ‘midpoint check’ will ensure that we have a clear understanding of what the children need to learn in year 2.

7 THIS IS NOT A READING TEST
What will the children be expected to do? The check is very similar to tasks the children already complete during phonics lessons. Children will be asked to ‘sound out’ a word and blend the sounds together.eg d-o-g - dog The focus of the check is to see which sounds the children know and therefore the children will be asked to read made up ‘nonsense’ words. THIS IS NOT A READING TEST

8 Examples of words:

9 gight thrist

10 crunch shrenk

11 When will the screening take place?
The screening will take place throughout the week beginning Monday 12th June The children may only take the check the following week if they were absent during check week. So it is very important your child is in school during this week. It is also important for them to be in school in the lead up to the test. The check has been designed so that children of all abilities will be able to take part.

12 Who will complete the check?
The children will complete the check, one at a time in a quiet area of the school. Teachers will conduct all of the screening checks with the children on a 1-1 basis. The screening will only take 5-10mins with each child.

13 How can you help? Digraph- 2 letters making one sound cow
Encourage your child to ‘sound out’ when reading or writing. Focussing particularly on spotting more unusual sound patterns. Eg Digraph- 2 letters making one sound cow Trigraphs- 3 letters making one sound night Split digraphs- 2 vowels with a consonant inbetween. Used to be known as the magic e! spine - i_e

14 How can you help? http://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/BuriedTreasure2.html
Encourage your child to use their sound mat when writing and use their actions to find the sound they need. Children can practise their phonics by playing games online. The children particularly like ‘Buried Treasure’

Download the app and practise real and alien words

16 How can you help? REMEMBER: Phonics is not the only thing needed to become a fluent reader. Please continue to read with your child each night and encourage them to: Sound out Re-read to check it makes sense. Use pictures for clues. Ask questions about the book. And most importantly ENJOY READING!

17 And the results...? Lawley Village Academy will be scored against a national standard (threshold yet to be determined by DfE – released later in the year, after the tests) We will inform you if whether they fall below or within this standard and all children will receive a certificate for taking part. If your child’s score falls below the national standard they can re-take the Phonics Screening Check in year 2.
