11 Means Of Evacuation The term ‘High Rise Building’ means…
Moving up and moving down is a major challenge. Are we right in advising “In case of fire, do not use lift ; use the stairs”? .

12 Vertical Transportation
The need for fully protected fire lift Lift (Elevator) : Escalator Passenger lift : Freight lift : Fire lift

13 FIRE LIFTS Requirements as per NBC
Part 4-Section 4 Annexure C- C.1.5 Part 8 Section 5 6.7 Fire Protection 6.8 Requirements for fireman’s lift

14 FIRE LIFT-DESIGN REQIUREMENTS
Structural Electrical Functional

15 FIRE LIFT –STRUCTURAL REQUIREMENTS
FIRE RESISTANCE (AS PER NBC) Walls of lift : 2hr Landing doors of lift enclosure :1hr Lift separator wall : 2hr Lift car door : ½ hr Solid doors :1 hr Lobby : ½ hr

16 FIRE LIFT –STRUCTURAL REQUIREMENTS – Cont.
Measures to minimize spread of fire from machine room: Automatic closing doors Fire lift above 15mt Car size 1.4sqm One lift per 1200 sq.m Ceiling hatch for emergency

17 FIRE LIFT –STRUCTURAL REQUIREMENTS – Cont.
Slope to prevent water Machine room at the top separated by floor Vent at the top of the shaft Collapsible gates not allowed

18 ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS
Alternate source of power Separate electric supply &safe route [lift shaft] Automatic trip over Fire man’s switch toggle or fire button in glass frame box at entrance level. Triggering by toggle switch /input from BMS

19 ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS –Cont.
All lift control switch Two position switch ‘on & off’ at evacuation floor. Buzzer and fireman’s lift light in car Grounding switches at ground floor level to ground lift.

20 FUNCTIONAL REQIUREMENTS
Minimum capacity 8 persons (544kg) During fire, only fire man can use Intercom between user & control rooms Pressurization of lobby Lift normally not travel to basement (Basement lobby to be pressurized) ‘Fire Lift’ displayed in fluorescent paint on the landing door at each floor.

21 FUNCTIONAL REQIUREMENTS – Cont.
Minimum speed of 1mps Speed requirement to travel between terminal floors in 1minute Phase I Stage If lift moving towards evacuation floor will, will continue to move up to evacuation floor. If lift move away from evacuation floor, shall reverse and return to evacuation floor

22 FUNCTIONAL REQIUREMENTS – Cont. Phase I Stage
If parked on other floor, will close doors and return to evacuation floor When stand at evacuation floor, shall park with doors open Lift does not respond to landing calls, but registers car calls

23 FUNCTIONAL REQIUREMENTS – Cont. Phase II Stage
Phase 2 operation starts if switch continue to remain on and doors start closing If switch button is released before doors close, doors re-open Car call is registered only after doors fully closed After call registration, lift moves to call floor

24 FUNCTIONAL REQIUREMENTS – Cont. Phase II Stage
After reaching the call floor, the door will open only while pressing the button. If pressing is stopped before the doors are fully open, the doors re-close

25 Can Fire Fighters use Elevators during Fire?
Improve Reliability by Improving Design Ensuring Independent / Alternate Power Enhanced Inspections / Maintenance Improved Communication & Information Implement Necessary Training Programs Adopt & Improve SOP

26 ANY ? PLEASE

27 Thank you
