2 Testing Past – only GC and MS were needed.
They increased the time doing mass spec - enables further separation of all molecules. 2 reasons not to use synthetic essential oils; Chirality and Incomplete Chemistry The doterra difference = sourcing and CPTG Industry standard is 30 min, do terra do min so can define all molecules in oils We cannot duplicate all the chemistry found in essential oils. For all benefits, all of them must be present. In synthetics many are missing  Chemical compounds have written and structural formula Menthol - C10 H20 O (found in peppermint EO) Structural is how it's orientated in space  Able to interact with cell receptor sites on cells. One of them  Communication with body is incomplete at best, detrimental at worse. Despite their great similarity in structure and a similar peppermint smell the isomer D menthol and D nome thou had no effect on nasal sensation airflow

3 Chirality – Looks at the rotation of the molecule in space
The Chemical formula of an oil can be recreated quite easily; E.g. Menthol C10H20O (Found in peppermint) But, we can’t recreate the structure in space Synthetic Peppermint = same chemical formula but different spatial form – does not help with congestion! Able to interact with cell receptor sites on cells. One of them  Receptor sites are the way cells communicate Any inducement of chemistry in the body will create a communication  Menthol can be recreated in lab but cannot control spatial orientation Communication with body is incomplete at best, detrimental at worse.

4 Chemical Polymorphism
Oils are selected for their Chemotype, e.g. Thyme Many different types – specific chemotype selected for best property Oil Tip: Aids Breathing – put on big toe! There are so many different types of Thyme – every oil is chosen for its best ability Some species of plants have the genetic ability to generate different chemical constituents due to the environment in which it resides. These different chemical types of the same genus and plant are called “chemotypes.” Knowing the chemotype of your essential oil is important, as they can contain different therapeutic properties

6 Info on the Internet! Need to be careful because a lot of these things do not apply to doTERRA Essential Oils Due to how we harvest and process the oil E.g. Vetiver from Haiti – Industry typically demands harvesting every 6 months Incomplete chemical development in the plant

7 Interesting facts about doTERRA’s Vetiver
Vetiver needs 24 months to develop We use a Square distillation unit as opposed to the standard Cylinder shaped one- this was told to doTERRA by local farmers to lead to a more complete chemical profile. Tests show this to be correct

8 Vetiver Cont.….. Most vetiver is ‘steam distilled’. doTERRA carries out ‘hydro diffusion’ this results in a more complete chemistry. In this process steam is forced from top of plant material downwards which gets more ketones and alcohols which results in a higher potency. 1 entire truck load of vetiver gives 2L of oil!

9 Pharmacokinetics How the essential oil reacts with your body
Essential oil usage – area of risk and effective range Can’t say exactly for each oil and person

10 We shouldn’t take oils above our metabolic capacity – can’t say exactly for each oil and each person – different limits at different times. Good to start small for new people and feel your way During optimal wellness is when to use daily protocol   When ill health best to use focuses usage

11 Graph – optimal wellness vs metabolic capacity
We generally use more oils when we are sick! Wrong way round. When we have optimal wellness, that is when we can start employing a daily routine of oils. When we are not well, we should have ‘focused usage’ “I’m using the oils and there just not working for me!” This is why – too much or too little!

12 ESSENTIAL OIL USES AROMATIC—Diffuse in a room to purify the air or to change emotion TOPICAL—Apply directly to skin during massage or for topical therapy INTERNAL—Consume as a dietary supplement for targeted wellness

13

14 All methods can be localised and systemic, you do not have to use every method – you need to feel comfortable, start slow! Internal = oils in a capsule – gastrointestinal tract (gut) = stomach and intestines Oral = oils under tongue – broad systemic

15 Inhalation 5 year study with Vanderbilt Hospital – citrus oils were diffused 24hours a day, 7 days a week for 5 years NO ADVERSE EFFECTS! Inhalation - can't get wrong - reduced bioavailability as not high concentration of oil

16 Also stimulating all of neurochemistry of the body, the whole nervous system

17 Dr Hills Favourites! Rest – Cedarwood, Lavender, Balance and Douglas Fir Mood – Serenity, Citrus Bliss, Ylang ylang, Peppermint, Geranium and Elevation Immunity – Coriander, Cinnamon, Purify, Breathe and Onguard

18 Dermal Localised, dermal layers are richly lipophilic and targeted application Isolated chemicals in the oils can often be more irritating. not as fast acting as takes time to absorb into tissues Dermal use not as fast acting as takes time to absorb into tissues then able to be utilised for longer

19 Stratum corneum Hair follicle Skin Absorption is how the EO move into the tissues  Penetration is how they move through the tissues  Stratum corneum very thin around eyes, much thicker under feet. Absorbs through hair follicles  Can take anywhere from an hour or 2 to 72 hours to fully absorb into the corneum  Can speed it up by heating, massaging

20 Systemic benefit - not diluted better
Localised benefits - diluted is better - keeps it localised in the tissues as slows down penetration

21 Perfect!

22 Recommended Ratio for dilution
Babies 0.3% dilution 1drop to 1 tablespoon Children 1.0% dilution 1 drop to 1 teaspoon Adults 2.0 – 4.0% dilution 3-6 drops to 1 teaspoon

23 Dosage Chart Adult Child Aromatic Internal Oral Dermal Ideal Amount
Adult Child Ideal Amount 24hr Max Aromatic - Internal 2 – 4 drops 12 – 24 drops 1 -2 drops 3 – 12 drops Oral 1 – 3 drops 4 – 18 drops Dermal 3 – 6 drops 12 – 36 drops 1 – 2 drops Dosage = Dependent on size and health of individual, it is best to start with smaller amounts.
