1 What Makes Macquarie Unique?
Australia’s number 1 modern university (<50 years old by Times Higher Education) Industry-defined programs and internships World-class research and facilities The Uni that helped start the Wireless Age

2 What makes Macquarie Engineering Unique?
“Ends-based” focus on engineering process Producing undergraduates for: Industry HDR Large number of scholarships, awards and prizes New Faculty Emphasis on practical experience Experiential teaching Socratic lecturing Problem-based learning Industrial guest lecturers Suburban/Urban Setting Easy access to CBD, Blue Mountains and beyond

3 History of Engineering at Macquarie
1990 Discipline of Electronics started under the School of Math, Physics, Computing and Electronics. Offers PhD programs and a BSc in Electronics 1999 University adopts “Divisions” rather than “Schools”. The Department of Electronics is established within the Division of Information and Communication Sciences. 2001 David Skellern and Neil Weste sell Radiata (wireless LAN technology) to Cisco for AU$567 million. 2004 First engineering undergraduate degree is offered. 2009 Electronics becomes the Department of Physics and Engineering 2011 Engineering becomes the Department of Electronic Engineering Engineering becomes the Department of Engineering Macquarie

4 BE Program Framework Professional Engineer

5 BE Program Framework Mechanical Software Electrical
“A cord of three strands is not easily broken”* Mechanical Software Electrical Looking to the future, we have decided that most engineers require a foundation that includes these three areas. So we began a curriculum review process to focus on these three majors Courses specific to these areas are specialization and make up just 20% of the degree. This means that it is easy to changes majors well into a degree. *Ecclesiastes 4:12 Photo: courtesy of

6 Current Undergraduate Degrees
Bachelor of Engineering (80 ATAR) Bachelor of Engineering with a degree of Bachelor of Arts (80 ATAR) Bachelor of Engineering with a degree of B. Commerce (80 ATAR) Bachelor of Engineering with a degree of Bachelor of Science (80 ATAR) Majors Electronic Engineering Mechanical Engineering Software Engineering About 40% of students do a double degree with Science. 5 years Currently in a process of curriculum review to make it more flexible for students. Going forward, all graduates will have solid understanding of these three components Engineering

7 Mechanical Engineering
First units in 2013 4 year accredited engineering program (Engineers Australia) Hands-on Mechanical Engineering Workshop in 1st year

8 What do Mechanical Engineers learn at University?
Strong foundation in basic sciences. Especially statics & dynamics (analysing forces within systems and structures). Materials, mechanics of solids and fluids, Thermodynamics. Failure analysis, modelling and design. Advanced options in manufacturing, novel materials, and micro-scale devices.

9 BE (Mechanical): Year 2 Units
Computer science Mathematics x2 Physics x2 common to all engineering degrees ENGG170 Introduction to Mechanical Engineering Practical training in machine shop practice (required, but not for credit)

10 BE (Mechanical): Year 2 Units
Introduction to professional engineering Mathematics Engineering thermodynamics and fluids Mechanical design Mechanics of solids Materials for engineering Unit/s in advanced topics or PACE units
