1 Microhydro training – Day 4 Visit to manufacturers
Myanmar Off-Grid Renewable Energy Demonstration Project (ADB TA 8657 MYA) Microhydro training – Day 4 Visit to manufacturers Dr. Soe Soe Ohn, Dr. , DRD engineers and staff from Naypyitaw and from Shan State, private micro-hydropower mini-grid developers– it is a pleasure and an honor to talk with you today about micro-hydropower. The DRD has a huge responsibility as the government department responsible for off-grid rural electrification. Mini-grids powered by micro-hydropower can be a wonderful technology for village electrification. Of course, they have to be built correctly and maintained. The DRD has important work to do either in overseeing the building of micro-hydropower projects, or in supporting developers and villages who want to build micro-hydro. What makes a good micro-hydro site? What are the key components, and how can they be built so that they are robust? A lot of what we will talk about today will focus on technology. But we have the flexibility to talk about whatever is important to you. We have four days, so we can take time to discuss these topics as much as would be helpful for you. If you have any questions or I have said something that is confusing to you, please, please speak up and ask questions. If there are topics I haven’t covered and you would like to cover, mention those and we can talk about them at the end. Here with us in the room is a lot of expertise on micro-hydropower. We have Tony Kalupahana, who is an accomplished micro- and small- hydropower developer who has built many hydropower projects in Sri Lanka as well as a number of African countries. Tony is now the mini-grid advisor for DRD based in Naypyitaw. Tony has built more hydropower projects than I have and has built much bigger ones. Even more important, we have the expertise of Shan state micro-hydropower developers. On day 2 we will visit two of your sites, Mya Ze Di and Miang where we will see many of the topics discussed put into action in the real world. Tony and SHPAM members – please do not hesitate to jump in and add more information, or to correct me if I make mistakes. Micro-hydropower is a technology that varies considerably from depending on the site conditions. Micro-hydropower practices also differ from country to country. While there are some right answers and some wrong answers, there are also many grey areas where different approaches are taken by different practitioners. 1 – 4 Nov, 2016 Taunggyi, Shan State, Myanmar
