3 Types of financial aid Loans Grants
Often referred to as “gift aid” because you don’t have to pay it back. Examples include Cal Grant, Pell Grant Loans Borrowed money that must be repaid with interest Examples include Direct Subsidized Loan, Plus Loan Generally, students can borrow between $5000-$20,000 per year Work Study Working part-time, typically on campus to help offset tuition costs Scholarships Money awarded to students for their accomplishments. “Gift aid”.

4 Types of scholarships Merit based
Financial assistance may be awarded based on abilities Academic, artistic, athletic, etc. Need based Financial assistance awarded based on student’s financial situation * The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)/Dream Act Application is the first step to determining if you qualify for most types of aid. Some scholarship applications will ask you to report your EFC (Expected Family Contribution) which is a number (not $ amount) that indicates level of need i.e. “0” means you have the greatest financial need. Deadline to complete the FAFSA/Dream Act application is March 2nd for Cal Grants, may be earlier (February 1st) for out of state schools.

You are straight out of high school Live in Ventura County and under 20 years old Must apply starting December 1st Includes Completion of the FAFSA/Dream Act for the school year Application to attend VC Fall 2017 Online Orientation In-person orientation with VC Counselor VC Promise Application completed by May 1st 2017 *see handout

6 VCCF (Ventura County Community Foundation)
$10.7 million available to Ventura County students Application online Can apply to up to 5 scholarships Requires an essay, 2 recommendations and your transcripts Deadline: end of January vccf.org

7 WUE (Western undergraduate exchange)
150% tuition rate compared to in-state tuition at public western state colleges/universities 2 or 4 year public colleges/universities generally offer WUE to CA graduates, sometimes with restrictions at competitive campuses Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wyoming See WUI Tuition Savings May require separate application or be part of college application.
