9. A City Drowning
By Eloísa Pérez-Lozano, League City You listen to deception, innocent-sounding pitter-patter on the windows individual rain drops falling slowly so you hear each one's small thump Suddenly, they quicken their voices meld together into a thunderous song an ominous chant, the soft roar of a liquid beast, whose shape is not one you can contain. This is an assault on my city as rain falls in sheets for days beating, hammering knocking the earth senseless drowning her over and over before she can come up for air. Drops are tiny fists as they fall pummeling the ground and when she won't give in they soak her, saturate her overtake her with millions of themselves, joined together gargantuan gallons of water a life-giving force turned murderer too much for us to take.

Ding! Yea! It’s the oven timer! Let the deliciousness commence! I almost burn my hand on the hot metal door as I throw it open in eager anticipation of the warm, chewy, cheesy, meaty goodness to come. I see the puffy crust has risen to a perfect golden hue around the edges, and the cheese is dripping over the side of the dark, round stone, just way I like it. I grab my oven mitts and pull it out, sitting in onto the stovetop. Then, I grab the big silver cutter and slice it into eight (almost) even slices. When I pick up the fist slice, it’s so heavy I almost drop it, but when the rich flavors of garlic and oregano overwhelm my tongue, I’m so very glad I didn’t!
