3. Introduction To Lubrication
They are used to minimize the friction between the moving parts in machines
The choice of lubricating oil depends on three factors
The velocity
must have suitable viscosity
Purification of lubricating oil
De-asphalting.
De-waxing.
Finishing.
Addition of improvement additives.

4. Purification of lubricating oil 1.(De-asphalting)
removal of materials that are able to oxidize giving water and acidic compounds. Which affect the viscosity.
Naphthenes are removed by specific solvents.
The most common solvents used are:- OH
Phenol

5. Purification of lubricating oil 2.(De-waxing)
Removal of materials that solidify under low temperatures
Waxes are removed wax solvents
3. Finishing
The oil is treated with activated clay and hydrogen.
Activated clay removes any traces of wax & naphthenes.
Hydrogen converts unsaturated hydrocarbons to saturated ones.

6. 4. Addition of improvement additives:-
Polymeric compounds so as its viscosity remains constant on raising the temperature.
Anti-oxidants to prevent oxidation of oil.

8. Examination of the lubricating oil: -
Precipitation test
A sample of the oil is taken, diluted, then centrifuged to insure the absence of any ppt.
B. Anti-oxidation test
if oxidation occurs the sample becomes turbid and water is formed.
