4 Guatemala Guatemala City is the largest city in Central America with a population of over 2million inhabitants.

5 Panama The Panama Canal connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. It took 14 years to build. 5,609 died of diseases and accidents during the U.S. construction period.

6 Petén is a tropical rainforest in Guatemala
Petén is a tropical rainforest in Guatemala. The Mayan ruins of Tikal are located inside the forest.

7 The Maya ruled from 250 to 900 A.D.
Maya influence can be detected in Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, and western El Salvador to as far away as central Mexico. The Maya developed a calendar so advanced that it rivaled the Julian Calendar.

8 Belize Belize is the only one of the seven Central American Countries whose national language in NOT Spanish. Belize’s National Language is English.

10 Costa Rica The best time of year to surf in Costa Rica is in February. The Pacific Coast is the best coast to surf.

11 Costa Rican Balls are found on the Island of Caño, and in several other locations. The stones are believed to have been first created around the year 600, with most dating to after 1,000 but before the Spanish conquest. There are around 500 of these rock orbs, which range in diameter from just 10 cm. to two and a half meters. They are carved in black granite or granodiorite, a rock similar to granite.

12 El Salvador and fútbol The main sport played by Salvadorans and the rest of Central America is fútbol (soccer).  The Estadio Cuscatlán in the capital San Salvador is the largest stadium in Central America, with a capacity of just over 45,000. The stadium is the home ground of the El Salvador national football team, as well as club teams Alianza FC and San Salvador F.C.

13 Honduras – Sawdust Carpets
Being a predominantly Catholic country, Honduras gives special attention to the celebrations of Holy Week. Processions are held, especially during Thursday and Good Friday. Through these events, Hondurans reenact the events that happened during the week between Palm Sunday and Easter. The most outstanding event is the creation of the sawdust carpets. People will decorate the trail where Jesus will walk through to make the walk less painful.

14 The Mosquito Coast The Mosquito Coast, also known as the Miskito Coast, is an area along the eastern coast of present-day Nicaragua and Honduras. It was named after the local Miskito Indians.

15 Puerto Rico Is a territory of the U.S.
Originally populated for centuries by aboriginal people known as Taíno. Today, people born in Puerto Rico are natural-born U.S. citizens. The territory operates under a local constitution, and Puerto Ricans elect their own governor. Puerto Rico lacks voting members in Congress.

17 El Yunque is the only tropical rain forest in the United States National Forest System. 
El Coquí is a small frog that earned its name due to the call of the most common coquí species on Puerto Rico.

18 Cuba Cuba came under the dictatorship of former president Fulgencio Batista in Growing unrest and instability led to Batista's ousting in January 1959, which afterwards established a government under the leadership of Fidel Castro. Since 1965 the country has been governed as a single-party state by the Communist Party. Now Cuba is lead by Raúl Castro, Fidel’s younger brother. Cuba’s top exports are nickel mattes, raw sugar, refined petroleum, packaged medicaments and rolled tobacco.

19 Baseball is the most popular sport in Cuba
 Baseball is the most popular sport in Cuba. Introduced by American dockworkers in Havana in the 19th century, the game has played a role in Cuban independence from Spain. Banned in 1895 by the Spanish, secret games funded José Martí's revolt. Cuban peloteros rank highly internationally and some have migrated to Major League Baseball in the United States. The Cuba national baseball team finished second in the first World Baseball Classic against the Japanese national team. 

20 Dominican Republic The Dominican Republic shares the island of Hispaniola with Haiti. The capital of the Dominican Republic is Santo Domingo, which is the oldest city in the new world. It has a population of almost 2.5 million people. After the devastating earthquake on January 12, 2010 in Haiti, the Dominican Republic was one of the first countries to offer aid despite the two countries having a history of conflict. The Dominican Republic sent food, medicine, and teams to assess the damage. The country also eased visa requirements so the injured could seek treatment at Dominican hospitals.

21 Dominican Republic The main meal is served at midday and can last up to two hours. La bandera (the flag) is a popular national dish; the white rice and red beans remind people of the flag colors, hence the name. The third ingredient is stewed meat, and it is usually served with fried plantain and a salad. Another favorite dish is sancocho, a meat, plantain, and vegetable stew. 

22 Mexico The Aztec were an indigenous group that ruled the area in and around the Valley of Mexico from 1428 until they were defeated by the combined forces of the Spanish conquistadores and their native allies under Hernán Cortés in 1521. Their capital city, Tenochtitlan now lies under the current capital which is Mexico city. Mexico city is the third most populated city in the world. It is also the 16th most polluted city.

23 Two very popular holidays in Mexico are: Day of the Dead and Cinco de Mayo.
Day of the dead is when the people of Mexico don wooden skull masks called calacas and dance in honor of their deceased relatives. They place offerings at their deceased relative’s graves. Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of the Mexican victory at the Battle of Puebla. Many confuse this holiday as being their Independence Day.

24 Known as “The City of the Eternal Spring”, Cuernavaca is the chosen destination for many residents of Mexico City. The average temperature is 70ºF (21º C).
