1 Chapter 11 Section 3 Gas Giants

2 The outer planets Also called the Gas Giants
Consist of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune Primarily made of hydrogen and helium Large masses- so strong gravitational pull Small, solid inner core surrounded by liquid

3 Jupiter Largest planet 1000 Earths would fit in Jupiter
90 % Hydrogen, 10 % Helium- atmosphere Great Red Spot is a storm of Swirling gases Core is probably made of rock and metal Jupiter has at least 63 moons 4 largest are known as Galilean- because they were discovered by Galilei

4 Saturn 90 % hydrogen, 10 % helium Least dense planet
Outer gas layer, liquid layer, small solid core Ring system is the largest- 7 bands containing thousands of ringlets Saturn has at lest 60 moons Titan is a the same size as Mercury

5 Uranus Has narrow dark rings Diameter 4 times Earth
Atmosphere contains hydrogen, helium, and methane May have a solid rocky core Uranus has a tilted axis of rotation Uranus has at least 27 moons Pretty blue/blue green color due to methane

6 Neptune Atmosphere is made of hydrogen, helium, and methane
Has an iron core surrounded by partially frozen water Neptune has 13 moons and a faint ring system Also has a pretty blue/blue green color due to the methane
