Presentation on theme: "Aim: How are stars different from one another?"— Presentation transcript:

1 Aim: How are stars different from one another?
Do Now: Describe what it means when a star shows a “red-shift”.

2 How will the sun’s life end?

3 Why do stars shine so bright?
Stars The Sun is a star. A star is a big ball of gases that gives off heat and light. The Sun is only one of the billions of stars that make up our galaxy. Most stars appear white to the naked eye. However, a closer look reveals that stars come in different colors. Stars also show a huge range in size, brightness, and surface temperature. How large and massive a star is determines what will eventually happen to it. Different stars have different elements. Most stars are made up of the gases hydrogen and helium. Through the process of nuclear fusion, hydrogen atoms combine to make helium atoms and release a great amount of energy as heat and light. This process makes the stars shine bright. Star – is a large ball of gas held together by gravity that produces large amounts of energy Nuclear Fusion – lighter atoms (hydrogen) fuse together to form heavier atoms (helium) and release a great amount of energy (form of heat) Our Sun’s process of Nuclear Fusion: Hydrogen (lighter element) Helium (heavier element) Energy

4 How are stars categorized?
Hertzsprung-Russell diagram Bright 1)Temperature (K) (color) 2) Size 3) Luminosity (brightness) What type of star is the sun? med What is the size, temp, color and luminosity of the sun? Dim Hot Cold

5 How does our Sun compare in size to other stars in our Galaxy?

6 How do we describe the life cycle of a star?
Life cycle of a star is determined by the stars initial Mass and Size.

7 Explain the life cycle of the sun
Sun’s life cycle: Larger and cooler = Red Giant (solar system is engulfed up to Mars…bye bye Earthlings) Smaller and Hotter = White Dwarf Burn out (lose fuel) = Black dwarf
