1 Dell DL4000 Backup to Disk Appliance - powered by AppAssure software
Everything. Every time. On time. v This is a customer presentation to introduce the Dell4000 backup to disk appliance powered by AppAssure software.

2 The Dell Data Protection Portfolio
Everything. Every time. On time. DL4000 Backup appliance powered by AppAssure NetVault Protect large volumes of data across a wide range of platforms and applications. AppAssure Protect continuously. Move anywhere. Restore in little as seconds. vRanger Backup & restore. VMs at same time – without limits. Complex Virtual The realities of today’s backup environments present a host of challenges to customers including the following hardware challenges: System complexity Dealing with a variety of backup software and agents Setting up and maintaining backup & media servers Concerns about CPU utilization, memory, NIC speed, disk type and speed during the backup process Capacity and access to backup storage (tape or disk) Component compatibility Performance optimization In addition due to the growth of data, companies are dealing with the number of physical and virtual servers which must be managed, the cost of software and system components as well as the resources to configure, install and support backup and restore strategies. Dell is building a portfolio of backup solutions that meet the needs of today’s customers. Our portfolio gives companies the ability to backup everything, every time and on time. Whether it’s physical systems, virtual machines or mission critical data. The tenets of Dell’s data protection strategy are as follows: Be able to backup in minutes, restore in seconds Offer flexible, application aware solutions for physical and virtual environments Support backup and business continuity in one solution Optimize storage capacity and utilization The DL4000 is one solution within the portfolio and it compliments our software products NetVault backup and vRanger. 3 Deduplication is of Dell’s key pillars for data protection
Seconds Most Critical Synchronous Replication EqualLogic Array Snapshots Compellent Space-efficient snapshots AppAssure/DL4000 CDP Near-CDP Disk backup virtual tape libraries Quest Software vRanger NetVault LiteSpeed Backup replication Because the purpose of data protection is recovery, Dell has constructed a portfolio that allows you to protect information at all stages of it’s useful life. EqualLogic and Compellent storage arrays allow customers to create snapshots of production data for instant recovery and replicate data synchronously to another site. The Dell backup appliances such as the DL4000 and the DR4x00 series feature deduplication technology that works together with backup applications to reduce the amount of backup storage capacity needed while also ensuring that backup time windows are met. ( note snapshots using DP products are the entire eco-system – including applications and Operating systems). The Dell DL4000 is an integrated appliance featuring factory-installed award-winning AppAssure software. Because AppAssure has the ability to perform multiple point-in-time block-based snapshots of protected servers and VMs in intervals as little as five minutes, this gives you the ability to have near-instantaneous CDP (Continuous data protection). Finally, because the volume of data which must be protected is growing at such an enormous rate, the portfolio also incorporates our PowerVault MD1200 storage expansion shelves which are integrated to support both the DL4000 as well as the DR4x00 appliances and PowerVault tape libraries for use as archive data repositories. 4 Why buy a Backup Appliance versus Backup Software?
Requires backup server and target media Flexibility in software & hardware selection IT resources to manage hardware and software Ideal for larger, flexible storage and network architectures Backup Appliance Economical turnkey appliance using the latest generation server tightly integrated with backup/restore software and backend storage Components optimized and tested for supported configurations Improves Disaster Recovery with built-in ability to use Standby Virtual Machines Built in wizard make it easy to install and deploy Ideal for SMB and branch offices When considering whether or not to purchase a backup appliance customers should take into consideration several factors. Backup software requires both backup servers and target media. While it gives a company flexibility in choice of software and hardware it does require IT resources to manage these components. For companies with large or legacy storage and network environments as well as IT resources, this may be the best approach. However, for many companies the use of an integrated backup appliance like the DL4000 is an economical alternative because it comes equipped with the latest generation server tightly integrated with backup and recovery software as well as the necessary storage disks to house the backed-up data. An integrated appliance like the DL4000 uses components which have been optimized and tested to perform the backup task so customers don’t have to take the time to set up backup servers, software and storage media. Appliances also have deployment tools such as built-in wizards to speed installation – making them ideal for remote and/or branch offices. During this presentation we’ll describe how the DL4000 can speed up the task of backing up data while also delivering on the goal of data restoration.

5 The DL4000 Integrated Disk Backup Appliance
An integrated disk backup appliance with viable DR capability designed for business resiliency and maximum value. The DL4000 offers unique backup and recovery capabilities with short RPO and RTO enabling customers to cut the backup and recovery windows caused by data growth and the inefficacies of legacy backup infrastructures. Here’s a summary of the DL As mentioned before, it’s an integrated appliance – the software, server and storage have been built from the ground up to perform one task only – backup and restoration. It offers the unique ability to deliver short Recovery Point Objectives and Recovery Time Objectives by virtue of the built-in AppAssure software so customers can cut the time it takes to perform backup and recovery. This approach gives companies the ability to keep up with data growth while cutting down on inefficient and complex processes.

6 Extended Backup and Recovery Windows
Features of the DL4000 that meet today’s Data Protection and Recovery Challenges Extended Backup and Recovery Windows Backup as much as 288 time each day with 5 minute interval snapshots * Live Recovery and Virtual Standby for RTO as low as one minute* 1 Backup Solution Impervious to Data Corruption Built-in end-to-end data integrity verification Application Assurance** to detect and verify data consistency 2 Some of the highlights of the DL4000 are listed here and we will cover them in more depth during this presentation. As mentioned snapshots in as little as five minute intervals let you recover data quickly and at a granular level Built in hardware features add another layer of protection And finally, a wealth of recovery features give the solution the versatility to support environments that have both physical and virtual systems. One unique feature of the DL4000 is the built-in Microsoft HyperV hypervisor used to support Virtual Standby technology that continuously exports and updates a clone VM of a protected server or virtual machine, enabling near-instant restores in the event of server failure. The DL4000 appliance includes Virtual Standby is a physical-to-virtual (P2V) process that creates a clone virtual machine of a protected machine or agent. A Virtual Standby can be created using an ad-hoc or a continuous update export process. A Virtual Standby created using a continuous update is incrementally updated after every snapshot captured from the source agent. 7 DL4000 Data Protection Capacity License for Appliance
DL4000 Capacity Upgrades Software DL4000 Data Protection Capacity License for Appliance Hardware We’ll now move on to explore the new standard and high-capacity editions of the Dell DL The base system comes equipped with 10 hard drives GB, 2.5” SAS drives using RAID1 for the operating system and 8 1TB, 2.5” NL SAS drives using RAID6 for storage of backed up data. For companies that need additional backup storage capacity the system can be expanded using PowerVault MD1200 expansion shelves that feature 12 hot-pluggable SAS drives in 1TB, 2TB and 4TB capacities. This allows a customer to expand the total maximum capacity of the system up to 80TB usable post-RAID. MD1200 Expansion Shelf with twelve (12) hot-pluggable SAS 7200RPM Hard Disk Drives (HDDs)

8 Capacity Licensing – Eliminate unneeded flexibility and worry over agent licensing
User Agent licensing model – if you have the following to protect: 2 Microsoft Active Directory servers 2 Microsoft Exchange servers 1 Microsoft SQL server 2 File Servers 1 *nix system 1 Application Server This Adds UP! = 9 Total servers with 10TB of capacity required As data protection tasks grow over time, keeping the license model in synch with the number of servers and VMs under protection becomes more complex for purchasing and management Back end compressed and deduplicated (logical) capacity licensing model Standard Capacity UP to 40 TB logical* capacity Up to 40 servers (memory limit) High Capacity Up to 80TB logical capacity Up to 100 servers (memory limit) Target backup storage requirements based on current needs simplifies purchasing and management License the capacity needed without concern for # of servers/VMs protected Eliminate unneeded purchasing and management complexity Why is the DL4000 moving to a Capacity Based Licensing Model? This licensing model is driven by the accelerated adoption of disk-based backup and the near-exponential growth in storage capacity. Using a back-end capacity-based license model allows users to maximize the benefits of compression and deduplication provided by the DL4000. Users can also extend data protection to servers that were unsustainable using the per agent license model. Compression and Deduplication ratios are greatly affected by the type of data and the change rates. Using a back-end capacity-based model allows the user to monitor and manage the backup repository instead of managing the characteristics of the front-end business applications that “own” the data, change rates, deduplication ratios etc. Logical capacity is after deduplication and compression. For example 40TB logical = as much as 400 raw storage using dedupe ratio of 10:1. DL Appliance MD1200 Expansion Shelves 1 Capacity License *Logical capacity is after deduplication and compression. 12 DL4000 AppAssure Appliance Configuration Wizard
Used to: Select network interfaces Change hostname and join a domain Configure SNMP settings Provision enterprise disk storage Allocate capacity for two (standard edition) to 4 (high-capacity edition) standby VMs This is a screen shot of the Application configuration wizard used to select network interfaces, hostname, domain, SNMP settings and provisioning of the appliance storage. This wizard also permits the user to allocate capacity for standby VMs (2 on the standard edition and 4 on the high-capacity edition). When ESG Labs tested setup of the appliance in July 2013, they noted: “The initial deployment took less than 20 minutes using the AppAssure Appliance Configuration wizard, and integration with Active Directory simplified agent deployment and selection of clients to protect. The DL4000 delivers “set it and forget it” protection that comes ready to use in a pre-built appliance.”

13 Protect your environment. Not just data.
Protect Windows and Linux physical servers and virtual machines. Application aware backups for mission critical servers such as Microsoft Exchange and SQL Application Server Domain Controller SQL server Linux Small Business Server Use of AppAssure software on the DL4000 allows a customer to protect both Windows and Linux physical servers and VMs and perform application aware backups for mission critical servers such as Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server and SharePoint from a single platform. A key term to understand with AppAssure software is “core”. The AppAssure core is held in the DL4000 server and stored on two 300GB SAS drives. The core manages all the machine backups and services for used during backup, recovery, retention, replication, archival, and management. The core is a self-contained set of hardware code that runs a 64-bit variant of Microsoft Windows operating system. The AppAssure (core) software installed on the DL4000 protects the virtual and physical systems using unique smart agents. Besides tracking changed blocks between snapshots, the agents facilitate efficient data transfer to the AppAssure software core. AppAssure 5.3 performs target-based inline compression, encryption and data deduplication of the data received from the agent. The core then stores the snapshot backups in a repository – in this case the DL4000. DL4000 Appliance File Server Exchange Server

14 Snapshots with Inline Deduplication
Backup Images/Snapshots can be as frequent as 5 minutes are transferred to the Appliance and are globally deduplicated at ingest – this allows you to backup as much as 288 times/day Application Server Domain Controller Incremental Forever Snapshots SQL server OS APP DATA The agents are tightly integrated with Windows machines, Microsoft VSS and applications to provide consistency necessary for reliable restores. The agents enable on-demand snapshots of block devices along with changed block tracking (CBT) to accelerate recovery granularity and speed. Changed block tracking creates a ‘score card’ to track the blocks that have changed since the previous snapshot backup. When the next DL4000 snapshot backup is triggered, the score card is examined to identify what blocks are required for protection. These blocks are transferred from the protected server to the DL4000, where inline deduplication is administered so that only unique blocks are written to the DL4000 core repository. Because data is deduplicated across all servers in a DL4000 environment (global dedupe), a single repository configuration is desired. Snapshot Process The protection process commences with a base image followed by incremental snapshots forever. – this means that the DL4000 can take incremental snapshots in intervals as small as five minutes – or 288/day. The agent uses Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) to freeze and quiesce application data to disk to capture a file system consistent and an application-consistent backup. When a snapshot is created, the VSS writer on the (DL4000) target server prevents content from being written to the disk. During the process of halting of writing content to disk, all disk I/O operations are queued and resume only after the snapshot is complete while the operations already in flight will be completed and all open files will be closed. Application-aware backups are available for Microsoft applications only File Server Exchange Server

15 Recovery Assure™ AppAssure Recovery Assure™ technology constantly checks the protected data to ensure that the data can be recovered in the event of a disaster Friday, May 10, 2013 01:00 – C: D: E: F: 01:30 – C: D: E: F: 02:00 – C: D: E: F: 02:30 – C: D: E: F: 03:00 – C: D: E: F: 03:30 – C: D: E: F: 04:00 – C: D: E: F: 04:30 – C: D: E: F: 05:00 – C: D: E: F: 05:30 – C: D: E: F: 06:00 – C: D: E: F: 06:30 – C: D: E: F: 07:00 – C: D: E: F: 07:30 – C: D: E: F: 08:00 – C: D: E: F: 08:30 – C: D: E: F: 09:00 – C: D: E: F: 09:30 – C: D: E: F: 10:00 – C: D: E: F: 10:30 – C: D: E: F: 11:00 – C: D: E: F: 11:30 – C: D: E: F: 12:00 – C: D: E: F: 12:30 – C: D: E: F: . Exchange data is checked by mounting the Databases SQL server Incremental Forever Snapshots OS APP DATA Recovery Assure lets you perform automated recovery testing and verification of backups to ensure that data corruption is identified early and prevents corrupted data blocks from being maintained or transferred during the backup process. The process operates in conjunction with AppAssure’s continual incremental-forever backups (AppAssure runs incremental-forever backups after the first full backup for much greater speed and efficiency). AppAssure is automatically aware of Microsoft Exchange, SQL Server and SharePoint instances and the file systems in the machines being backed up. Each night, the Recovery Assure function goes into action to validate every backup completed that day. If the backup is validated, a green mark appears on the management screen next to that specific backup. This assures total application recoverability in the event of a disaster. In the rare instance when corruption has occurred, the backup is identified as invalid, marked in red on the management screen, and the administrator is notified immediately to take action. Otherwise, no operator involvement is required. Exchange Server SQL Server data is checked by attaching the databases to an instance

16 How DL4000 Works – Universal RecoveryTM
SAN or NAS Virtual Server AppAssure Universal Recovery™ allows users to recover from a virtual, physical or cloud image to any environment needed or available – including bare metal restore. The ultimate flexibility for disaster recovery z Bare Metal Restore VM Dissimilar hardware In additional to Recovery Assure, the use of AppAssure software on the DL4000 gives you the ability to use Universal Recovery technology for unlimited machine restoration flexibility. You can restore your backups from physical to virtual, virtual to virtual, virtual to physical, or physical to physical, and carry out bare metal recoveries to dissimilar hardware. Universal Recovery automates critical steps that used to take hours to complete manually when working across platforms, so you can recover from one system to another in a fraction of the time. It also eliminates the manual steps that are traditionally required to migrate from physical to virtual, virtual to virtual or even virtual to physical. It works across leading virtual platforms: VMware® and Microsoft® Hyper-V. It also works across multiple locations: your server room, disaster recovery center or in the cloud. And because it’s hardware agnostic, Universal Recovery eliminates the need to acquire and maintain identical spare machines. DL4000 Appliance Identical hardware

17 Licensed Standby VMs – included with purchase
AppAssure Virtual Standby technology performs instant and incremental updates to “warm” virtual machines on the Appliance. This doesn’t require purchase of additional HyperV license – it comes with the DL4000 appliance and is integrated into the server. SQL server Incremental Forever Snapshots A DL4000 Virtual Standby is a full copy of the protected server’s OS, application, and data that can be immediately stood up using the DL4000’s Hyper-V resources in the event that the production server is critically impacted. When configuring the DL4000 the user creates standby VMs and designates storage space for them in the base unit NL SAS drives. The AppAssure core software creates and maintains standby virtual machines of production server data for immediate restores as well as migration, DR testing, and test/development work. These VMs are fully bootable and are exact clones of the production servers’ most recent AppAssure snapshot image. Using the Microsoft HyperV hypervisor the snapshot can be exported as a standby VM. Continuous export of the standby VM maintains all backup data from a recovery point as well as data protection parameters, so that at the push of a button the virtual standby machine can immediately replace its production server. . Exchange Server

18 Standby VMs – what happens when a server fails
In the case of a complete server outage, simply power on the standby virtual machines on the Appliance. SQL server Incremental Forever Snapshots Using the Microsoft HyperV hypervisor, the AppAssure software continuously exports snapshots from the protected server to it’s virtual standby clone, validates the snapshot blocks and updates them within the standby VM. Continuous export maintains all backup data from a recovery point as well as data protection parameters, so that at the push of a button the virtual standby machine can immediately replace its production server. This assures application consistency for all Windows workloads including MS Exchange, SharePoint and SQL. Virtual Standby is fully integrated with AppAssure replication. Exchange Server

19 Standby VMs – data recovery using DL4000
Power up the standby virtual machines and resume operations. The agent in the VMs captures all updates made to the data in standby mode and replicates the data to the DL4000 when operations resume. SQL server Incremental Forever Snapshots Because the AppAssure agent in the standby VMs captures all the updates made to the data in standby mode and replicates it to the DL4000 operations can resume immediately by powering up the standby VMs on the DL Together with Live Recovery, Recovery Assure, virtual standby features that ensure immediate return to productivity in the case of disaster. Exchange Server

20 Disaster Recovery (Secondary) Site
Replication Backup images/Snapshots of the protected machines stack are replicated to a disaster recovery location using WAN optimized replication protocols. Data can be “seeded” to the secondary site using WAN optimized network bandwidth. Primary Site Disaster Recovery (Secondary) Site 1 Read data 2 Match data Replication is self-optimizing with a unique Read-Match-Write (RMW) algorithm that is tightly coupled with deduplication. With RMW replication the source and target replication service matches keys before transferring data, and then replicates only the compressed- encrypted-deduplicated data across the WAN resulting in a 10x reduction in bandwidth requirements. Replication copies the recovery points from a replication source to replication target on a per-protected-server basis. As recovery points are replicated, all recovery point files and registry settings are replicated to the secondary site (another DL4000 or another server loaded with AppAssure Core software) such that the loss of the replication source won’t mean the loss of all recovery points and protection settings. Since the amount of data to be replicated the first time may overwhelm the network bandwidth or time windows, initial seeding can be done using external media the first time a DR site is established. The initial data seed in is compressed, encrypted and deduplicated. If the total size of the archive is larger than the space available on the removable media, archive can span across multiple devices based on the available space on the media. During the seeding process, the incremental recovery points are replicated to the target site once the seeding archive is consumed into the target core, the newly replicated incremental recovery points are automatically synchronized. 3 Write data which has no match

21 Primary Site – protect servers
Replication- Warm to DR system off-site (cold) Primary Site – protect servers Disaster Recovery/Replication 1 Read data 2 Match data 3 Write data which has no match Must be licensed for any servers protected Off site system – no servers protected; used only for replication & recovery of protected servers; no license required As mentioned previously replication can occur between primary sites with either Core AppAssure software or a DL4000 to another DL4000 or AppAssure core that is used solely for replication and recovery but doesn’t include the purchase of a license that support AppAssure data protection of servers at the secondary site. The replication source and replication target can be any combination of supported operating systems. In the event of a link failure or transfer error, when the link comes back up, the transfer is resumed from where it was interrupted. All recovery points that are replicated are verified for integrity. Disaster Recovery License Scenarios Supported Primary site DR site Core DL4000

22 Replication - Warm to Warm
Primary Site Secondary Site Protect local servers, replicate to secondary site Secondary site – protect local servers and replicate to primary site However since many companies what to be able to have replication and protection at both primary and secondary sites, replication can also be enabled two ways as long as both the primary and secondary sites have a purchased AppAssure or DL4000 licenses. Disaster Recovery License Scenarios Supported Primary site DR site Core DL4000

23 Standby VM with Replication
Backup images/snapshots of the protected machines stack are replicated to a disaster recovery location using WAN optimized replication protocols. Data can be “seeded” to the secondary site. Seeding allows you to perform an initial data transfer using external media, this is helpful when you have a very large data set and/or the available network bandwidth isn’t sufficient to do initial replication. Configure an external Hyper-V or ESX(i) to support larger loads. DL4000 (local) DL4000 (Remote) Replication Replication scenarios also support the exporting of a standby VM to a DL4000 at a remote site using WAN optimized replication protocols. Continuous Standby VM

24 Standby VMs with External Hypervisor
DL4000 standard edition supports two Standby VMs. Configure an external Hyper-V or ESX(i) to support larger loads. Application Server Domain Controller Incremental Forever Snapshots SQL server OS APP DATA Continuous Virtual Standby Because the DL4000 uses some of the base unit storage capacity for standby VMs, some situations may require larger data repositories to be used as failover sites. In this case, you can configure standby VMs using external VMware or HyperV hypervisors. File Server Exchange Server

25 Multiple ways to recover data
Bare Metal Recovery Granular Recovery of Exchange Mailbox Data Recovery of Files and Folders Granular Recovery of SharePoint Data So you can see that the DL4000 with AppAssure software give you multiple ways of protecting information. Because of the continuous incremental snapshots, standby VMs, application-aware backups and the multiple replication methods, customers can recover entire servers (bare metal recovery), volumes or granular files, s, or SharePoint data. Instant Recovery of Volumes Standby VMs to remote VMware ESXi Standby VMs to local and remote Microsoft Hyper-V
