4 Inclusion “Inclusion helps to show children how to appreciate and celebrate differences” (Virginia Department of Education 2007) Research has shown that inclusion classrooms help children develop social skills through: peer modeling, positive peer interactions, and increased social participation Other benefits include: developing language, communication, cognition, and play skills Staff would include: - licensed special education teacher -At least one instructional assistant - Therapists that push in services or come on a consult basis

Fifth Street Baptist Church Development Center Head Start Location Classes: - Head Start Classes - Child Development Center serves children ages 2-5 through Richmond Public Schools Exceptional Education Department 2800 3rd Ave, Richmond VA, 23222

7 Part Time ECE & ECSE Children with disabilities participate in an ECSE program, but also a school or community ECE program. The children receive part of their services in the ECE program and the rest of their services in the ECSE program. They usually attend each program during the same times or day each week. Collaborative & Consultative Three Design Types: 1) Dual Enrollment 2) Visiting Program 3) Part Time Kindergarten Staff Includes: - ECSE Teacher - ECE Teacher - Instructional Assistants - Therapists that provide services at both or one location (Virginia Department of Education 2007)

9 Reverse Inclusion “Children with disabilities receive special education and related services in a classroom designed for children with disabilities but also contains children without disabilities “ (Virginia Department of Education 2007) A successful program would include: combining ECE & ECSE practice, facilitating social interactions and integrated therapy Full time & part time options available, depending on program specifics and child needs Staff would include: - Licensed Special Educator - Instructional assistant(s) - ECE general education teacher - therapists and other support staff that would push in for services

Oak Grove Bellemeade Elementary School - 1 Reverse Inclusion Classroom 2409 Webber Ave, Richmond VA, * The Amelia Street School - Attempted to launch a reverse inclusion program in the fall, but has been unsuccessful thus far

11 Self Contained Designed for children with disabilities and taught by a special education teacher Children receive all of their special education and related services in programs designed for children with disabilities Children in self contained classrooms receive more individualized and one on one time Limited to no interaction with typically developing peers (Self Contained Classrooms 2015) Staff Includes: - Licensed special education teacher - Two instructional assistants - Therapists (OT, PT, SLP, child psychologist) on a set schedule or consult basis
