3 The message of John’s letter
Jesus Christ has appeared as our Eternal Life. Chapters 1-3 John is making distinctions so that the truth can be clearly grasped. Chapters 4-5 “Therefore, love one another.” 3

5 1 John 5:12-13 (NIV84) 5:12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 5:13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life. 5

6 1 John 5:14-17 (NIV84) 5:14 This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 5:15 And if we know that He hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of Him. 5:16 If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death, he should pray and God will give him life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that he should pray about that. 5:17 All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death. 6

20 The sin that leads to death making a habit of the sin of refusing to repent and refusing to welcome forgiveness from Jesus. The sin that does not lead to death makes a habit of responding to the conviction of the Holy Spirit 20

Confidence that God answers prayer 1 John 3:16-17 (NIV84) 3:16 This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. 3:17 If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? 3:18 Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. 21

22 1 John 5:16 (NIV84) 5:16 If anyone sees his brother commit a sin that does not lead to death, he should pray and God will give him life. ... Our prayers and our other acts of Christian love will bring them into life if they repent and receive Christ’s forgiveness. 22

27 Complacency in the Christian life
1 John 5:21 (NIV84) 5:21 Dear children, keep yourselves from idols. Complacency in the Christian life is dangerous! 27

28 Our default setting can indeed be Christ!
1 John 5:18 (NIV84) 5:18 We know that anyone born of God does not continue to sin; the One who was born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot harm him. 1 John 3:9 (NIV84) 3:9 No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. 28
