Season/Trade Crop Segment Indian Crop size in World % Rank Crop Prospects Implications on Crops Kharif Summer Crops (Rain Fed) Grains Cereals Soybean 4% 5 Maharashtra is the second largest grower of soybean and the crop cultivation in the state is expected to be hit significantly. However, farmers might shift to drought resistant crops such as castor. Corn 3% 7 Corn production in Maharashtra, AP and Rajasthan could be severely hit. However, due to a surplus in the global market, prices are not expected to be affected to significant levels. Pulses 50-60% 8 Pulses production in India happens across the country and is expected to be severely hit. Pulses prices are expected rise significantly due to drought and current low inventories. Spices Black Pepper 18% 2 Pepper production is expected to supported by outputs from Kerala and Karnataka. Chili 35% Chili is largely grown in Andhra Pradesh, which is expected to be hit by low rainfall and depleting water tables. Price of the commodity could witness a steep rise. Turmeric 72% 1 Tamil Nadu is the largest grower of turmeric in India and the state’s water levels are currently depleting Cardamom 32% Cardamom production is not expected to be severely hit due to good outputs from states such as Kerala, Sikkim and West Bengal Softs Sugar 19% Maharashtra is the second largest sugarcane producing state in India. Cane production in this state is expected to be severely hit. Cotton 21% Cotton production in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu could be affected to significant levels. Others Guar Seed 80% Western Rajasthan, the major area of guar production is under water stress. Hence, its yield is likely to be abysmally low. Mentha Oil 82% Prospects of mentha oil are expected to be good as it is grown in the water surplus, UP region. Rabi Winter Crops (Irrigated) Grains Wheat 13% 3 Wheat is largely grown in states such as Uttar Pradesh and Punjab which are not expected to be hit severely. However prices of wheat may rise due to less moisture availability in the soil for the Rabi season. 9%  2 A fall in acreage compared to last year will result in high prices. Alarm Good Poor 1
