The new stuff doesn’t outweight the cost, time or risk Licenses Maintenance Implementation Customization Administration Third Party Integration Drive towards a performance based culture you need To change behavior with transparency – you need to optimize your run the business costs Optimize Cost for Performance Rationalize to Sustain Value Creation So in order to make strategic investments to change the business When you consider the 20+ year history of this market, you’ll recall that one large and monolithic vendor gained notoriety and market share by licensing a packaged ITSM solution and a platform that offered workflow functionality that IT organizations extended into the business. While this extended the value of the investment, the customization of the offering in order to meet the needs of the business proved to be a challenge, and customers knew that the more customization they did with the product, the more difficulty occurred when it was time to upgrade the core platform. When we new Software-as-a-Service competitor came on the scene in the earlier part of this decade, they also gained notoriety and market share by licensing a packaged ITSM solution and a platform that offered workflow functionality that IT organizations extended into the business. The won with a message stating their product required trace amounts of customization, could be implemented quickly, and that upgrades would be simple and easy. To date, they have been unable to deliver on those promises. In a 2014 report, Gartner cited that “(customers) report no upgrading to the latest code version due to customized configurations” and that “upgrades have proved very difficult.” As you evaluate solutions in 2016, it isn’t feasible to do clean installations, where you don’t configure or customize the out of the box solutions. You have unique requirements, which need to be met, but to this point have been conditioned that the only way to have a solution that is easy to manage and maintain is to either A) never customize and have unmet needs, or B) never upgrade to take advantage of new functions and features. Recently, ITSM Review, an independent third party analyst firm, asked vendors “On a scale of 1 to 10 (whereby 1 is entirely configurable in-house and 10 is entirely dependent on consulting/training services) please provide an estimate of the level of configuration you are able to achieve with your ITSM tool.” The vendors provided the answers you see here. Cherwell is categorized as a 1 – easy to configure. You’ll notice many of our competitors categorized themselves as “easy to configure” as well. ITSM Review, being as smart as they are, then turned around and asked customers the exact same question. Our customers also rated us as “easy to configure.” However, you’ll notice that the competition’s customers did not rate them the same. There are a couple of interesting points here: First, are vendors and their customers aligned on the true capabilities of their solution? Even more, the more difficult a solution is to configure, the higher the long-term costs and lower the ROI Cherwell platform is rated “easiest to configure in-house” due to the codeless configuration platform. The delta in what customers say and what the vendors say equals dollars. The harder it is to customize your solution to meet your unique business requirements, the higher your total cost of ownership. Yes - Cherwell products allow IT to resolve incidents faster, reduce system downtime, better optimize software licenses, track and manage IT investments from purchase to retirement, and improve customer satisfaction and retention. The reality is, many software offerings available can do those things, and might even offer their products at a lower acquisition costs. However, none of those solutions are meta-data designed, and therefore do not provide the flexibility required to customize, configure, integrate or extend, which increases the total cost of ownership of the product over it’s useful lifecycle. Cherwell increases ROI by not only automating processes and improving reporting and visibility, but decrease TCO by requiring fewer development administrative resources than traditional legacy solutions. Main Competitors Background. BMC led the ITSM market through the early 00’s offering an ITSM product and their Remedy Action Request System, which offered workflow functionality that IT organizations extended into the business. While this extended the value of the investment, the customization of the offering in order to meet the needs of the business proved to be a challenge. Gartner cited in a 2005 report “the more customization a company does (with ARS), the more difficulty it will have at upgrade time. Through the late 00’s to now, ServiceNow began to take market share from BMC, offering an ITSM product, and their CreateNow platform, which also offered workflow functionality that IT organizations extended into the business. Whereas BMC ARS was on premise, ServiceNow, a software-as-a-service offering, won deals on a message stating their product required little to no customization, straightforward implementations and easy upgrades. To date, they have been unable to deliver on that process.
