1 FP2020 Reference Group Priority actions for 2016
Progress on Commitments Can include formal FP2020 commitment and/or recent announcements (e.g., commitments at October 2015 Reference Group meeting) Institutional: CIFF has been a longstanding FP2020 supporter. At the October ’15 Reference Group we highlighted our continuing commitment to adolescents and high-impact approaches. To date we have approved multi-year investments valued at over $50M in programs that contribute to FP2020 goals: We have teamed up with other funders to expand access to contraceptive choices (Implants, Sayana Press, self-injection and generics). We have committed over $17M, working with a range of partners to roll-out easy-to-use contraceptive injections and self-injection. We have a large contingent liability as part of the Implants Volume Guarantee. We have approved new multi-year investments of $33M to support adolescent SRH programs in Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria and Tanzania, working with PSI, MSI and other in-country partners. Individual: I have elevated adolescent sexual health within CIFF’s organizational structure. I am backing new research produced by the Guttmacher Institute (Adding-It-Up), on how ending the unmet need for contraception among adolescents is a best-buy. I am challenging CIFF to develop integrated ways to prevent teenage pregnancy – leveraging our track-record and partnerships in nutrition, education and child survival. Notes: Roll-out of three new contraceptive options: injectables, progesterone only pills (POPs) and Ormeloxifene (non-hormonal weekly pill: centchroman – Indian brand) in the public health system. At present, India is in the process of rolling out injectables once the branding and packaging for the injectables is finalized. Current status: waiting for GoI to provide a waiver to finalize both the outer packaging labeling and the inside labeling of the vial. No lead time provided for when this will finalized during the FP call… Scaling up national logistics management information system (LMIS) for contraceptives Status update: Scaling up of the LMIS – in the process of scaling up in Rajasthan state. Since health is a state subject, not all states are interested in developing an LMIS just for contraceptives. Developing LMIS aligns well with the global priority of strengthening supply chains and effective data utilization. Availability of LMIS data will allow decision makers to determine: when to order, how much to order, total consumption, and available stock. Having a robust LMIS will lead itself to effective logistics data utilization. National family planning communication campaign for changing social norms and bringing visibility to family planning programming A communication package was launched at the summit with Mr. Amitabh Bachchan as the brand ambassador. The package consists of short films, audio spots and posters with messages targeting various members in the family. The FP communication package emphasized on age at marriage, delaying and spacing of births and responsibilities of both partners and the family in family planning. Rebranding and repackaging public sector commodities to make them more appealing to the consumers.. June 29-30, 2016 Reference Group meeting, London

New or Updated Commitments & Priority Actions to Drive Progress to 2020 Institutional: CIFF is committed to preventing teenage pregnancy. We focus on innovation, catalyzing change, scaling what works, and ensuring long-term sustainability. Our immediate geographic priority is Kenya and India (Rajasthan), where we applaud strong government commitments to adolescent reproductive health. In both, we will prioritize innovation. What works for adolescents requires new approaches – placing adolescents at the center of design processes, strengthening tools so they can take control of their sexual health, and challenging societal norms and the politics on teenage sexuality. We will integrate access to contraception within broader adolescent SRH services, notably the prevention of HIV and unsafe abortion. We will continue to invest in greater contraceptive choice, where our immediate focus is to work with others to make the transition to self-injection a reality. Individual: I will ensure our network of committed partners (local and global) working to transform adolescent sexual health have greater opportunities to inform and influence CIFF’s direction. I will keep CIFF focused on where we add value – unafraid to innovate, challenge norms, test and fail fast. I will use my campaigning experience to inject energy and anger into family planning messages. Notes: Roll-out of three new contraceptive options: injectables, progesterone only pills (POPs) and Ormeloxifene (non-hormonal weekly pill: centchroman – Indian brand) in the public health system.
