2 Lesson Objectives The student will be able to:
State the rules for performing operations involving exponential terms Complete operations using exponential terms

3 Review: What is an Exponent?
An exponent, n, (written as superscript) means to multiply the base by itself n times. exponent base

4 Operations involving exponential terms
Addition: if the base and exponents in the terms are the same, add the coefficients of the bases Ex: Subtraction: if the base and exponents in the terms are the same subtract the coefficients of the bases EX: Note:

5 Operations involving exponential terms
If the bases are the same: Multiplication: add the exponents EX: Division: subtract the exponents Ex:

6 Operations involving exponential terms
Taken to a power: multiply the exponents Ex.

7 Example Simplify.
