Internet Safety ‘e-Safety’ and it’s importance

2 Aims Understand the issues involved with E-safety and why it is a growing concern in our society. Understand the E-safety related risks involved when using the internet and social media. Understand the strong links to Terrorism/Radicalisation and the PREVENT/CHANNEL government prevention strategies and support links. Understand the ‘golden rules’ for keeping your self safe when using ICT in general.

3 Why has ‘e-Safety’ become such a concern?
Social networking websites and apps, such as Facebook, MySpace, Instagram, Viber, Tumblr, SnapChat, Ask.fm and Twitter have become incredibly popular in recent years. Most users are genuine, but because it is so easy to hide your real identity, it is possible to come into contact with people you would normally avoid.

Why would someone want to be a terrorist? A lack of identity or belonging Insecurity Defending their culture, way of life or beliefs They may be pressured, or bullied into it They may have been radicalised by violent extremist groups They may want retaliation

CONTEST - Government’s counter-terrorism strategy. PREVENT - Prevent is about safeguarding people and communities from the threat of terrorism. CHANNEL - Channel provides support across the country to those who may be vulnerable to being drawn into terrorism. The overall aim of the programme is early intervention and diverting people away from the risk they may face.

8 Our Focus - E-mails, Spam & Phishing and Viruses
What are these? What risks do they pose? Spam - unsolicited bulk messages, especially advertising. Phishing - the act of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details. Viruses/Adware/Malware - programs that may be harmful to your computer.

9 Some Golden Rules Don't give out personal information such as your address or phone number. Don’t send pictures of yourself to anyone, especially indecent pictures. Don't open s or attachments from people you don't know. Don't become online ‘friends’ with people you don't know. Never arrange to meet someone in person who you've met online. If anything you see or read online worries you, tell someone about it. Teacher/Safeguarding Appointed Persons.
