Ms. Dresnack has asked me to talk to you today about time management, and I’m happy to do that. Let me first say what Time Management is NOT: It is not a set of random skills that I’m going to teach you. Instead it is about… Lecture Note Taking Strategies for College Students

2 Lecture Note Taking I am going to introduce you to a lecture note taking system that will ask you to adopt some new and strategies. The note taking strategies are based on research on how the brain learns and are designed to help you optimize your . We are more willing to adopt new behaviors if we know there will be a reward, such as improved grades, for doing so. Attaching new behaviors, in this case, a new note taking system, to your academic will motivate you. 9 Lecture Note Taking Why aren’t students taking notes or why do they take notes poorly? Note taking will distract from listening. Notes are unnecessary b/c material is in readings or on slides. Never had to do it before. Don’t know how. But sometimes making time to learn & to study is frustrating. topics are not all equally interesting you may want to be doing other things or you’re too busy right. so…look at slide EG SLC 2016

10 Lecture Note Taking Why Should Students Take Notes?
Note taking focus memorization. Note taking helps increase your comprehension of information. Taking notes helps us to sort and store information in a more organized fashion. Note taking promotes retention of information. Evidence from studies proves that using a note taking system improves test scores by a full letter grade (source Cohen, D., Kim, E., Tan, J., & Winkelmes, M. (2013) A note-restructuring intervention increases students’ exam scores.
